Head Custodian for Caliche Schools

Re-1 Valley School District is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and community-minded individual to serve as the Head Custodian for Caliche Schools. This position plays a vital role in ensuring our students and staff have a clean, safe, and well-maintained learning environment each day. Caliche Schools is a rural school located in northeastern Colorado. We provide a unique opportunity as a preschool through twelfth-grade school. We offer students a variety of extracurricular opportunities in Athletics, Band, Theater, FBLA, FFA, NHS, and our unique leadership program.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. In a small rural school setting, the Head Custodian serves as the lead building custodian and performs a wide range of custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping duties while coordinating daily cleaning operations and assisting with facility events and emergencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Building Maintenance & Custodial Services
    • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other school facilities.
    • Perform daily, weekly, and seasonal cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting.
    • Monitor building conditions and report maintenance concerns promptly.
    • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance as assigned.
    • Ensure all custodial equipment is properly maintained and safely operated.
  • Leadership & Coordination
    • Serve as the lead custodian for the building.
    • Assist in assigning and coordinating work schedules and duties of custodial staff as directed.
    • Train and support custodial staff on proper cleaning procedures and safety practices.
    • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and submit requests for replenishment.
  • Safety & Security
    • Open and secure the building according to district procedures.
    • Conduct routine inspections of facilities for safety hazards.
    • Assist with emergency preparedness and response activities.
    • Maintain compliance with district safety protocols, chemical handling procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Grounds & Event Support
    • Assist with snow removal, ice mitigation, and grounds upkeep.
    • Prepare facilities for school events, athletic activities, meetings, and community use.
    • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment as needed.
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and community members.
    • Participate in required training and professional development.
    • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform physical labor.
  • Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred:

  • Previous custodial or facilities maintenance experience.
  • Experience supervising or leading staff.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or general maintenance repairs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and climbing.
  • Ability to work around cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
