Fall 2026 Adjunct Faculty SPSY 623 Learning, Development & Cognition in the Social Context

Saint Mary's College of California – Adjunct Faculty – SPSY 623-01 Position: Adjunct Faculty for Counseling Program course SPSY 623-01 (Learning, Development & Cognition in the Social Context) – 3 units – August 30–December 18, 2026. Responsibilities This course examines theories and research in child development, infancy through adolescence, across cognitive, physical, social, linguistic, and emotional domains as it relates to the practice of school psychologists in preK-12 settings. Emphasis is placed on how students develop in academic domains and on the use of curriculum‑based assessments to inform the identification of struggling learners and effective interventions. Students will develop a critical and historical perspective of the systems of schooling in the United States, how this history impacts students and families, and the behaviors, attitudes, and pedagogical practices that challenge dominant ideologies that perpetuate systemic inequalities in preK-12 schools. Qualifications Required: Candidates must have an M.S., M.A., or Ph.D. in School Psychology and be a credentialed school psychologist in the state of California with a minimum of three years experience as a practicing school psychologist. Faculty who teach any PPS specialization course will need to have work in preK-12 school settings in the last three years. Preferred: A Ph.D. in School Psychology is highly desirable; a successful record of graduate‑level teaching experience; current license in Marriage & Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling, Educational Psychology, or Psychology and/or National Certification in School Psychology from the National Association of School Psychologists; a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, multicultural/international competence, social justice, clinical expertise, and familiarity with counseling & psychological theory and practice.
