Shift Lead - 6 month fixed term

Overview Dining Shift Lead is a frontline leader within Stanford Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE). The role supports daily operations within an assigned station or service area during the residential student dining meal program and late-night retail service, ensuring high-quality meals, hospitality, and service standards. The position reports to the Dining Manager and is designated as essential with onsite work required. Responsibilities Assist in delivering high-quality meals and consistent hospitality by guiding team members and maintaining service standards. Work with staff to ensure food is properly prepared, presented, and served in accordance with established standards. Create a positive, student-centered dining environment by supporting service flow, responding to immediate needs, and reinforcing expectations for quality, cleanliness, and teamwork. Maintain operational consistency and communicate effectively with supervisors regarding issues or needs during the shift. Coordinate activities of dining staff, casual employees, and students to ensure smooth operations. Answer questions, resolve problems for students, and provide the most positive experience possible. Complete opening or closing checklists as assigned and oversee cleanup to prepare the dining area for the next shift. Ensure the servery, food, plate ware, silverware, and glassware are replenished during busy periods. Provide oversight to maintain sanitation and presentation standards throughout the shift. Job Purpose Provide functional coordination presence and daily operational oversight of residential dining, retail, or catering services. Core Duties Support high-quality food execution by ensuring proper setup, food presentation, portioning, and replenishment within assigned stations. Deliver consistent hospitality at the point of service by maintaining a welcoming, helpful presence and supporting positive student interactions. Assist with efficient service flow by monitoring station readiness, minimizing delays, and supporting throughput during peak periods. Maintain cleanliness and organization by ensuring assigned areas meet sanitation and presentation standards throughout the shift. Follow and reinforce food safety and compliance standards including proper handling, labeling, and storage procedures. Provide peer-level leadership and support by helping direct team members, answering questions, and reinforcing expectations during service. Ensure temperatures are logged at the correct times; take corrective action if there is a temperature issue. Coordinate activities for Hillel foodservice workers, casual employees, and students as needed. Be available to talk to customers, answer questions, and resolve problems to provide a positive experience. Complete opening or closing checklists depending on assignment. Oversee cleanup to ensure the dining hall is prepared for the next shift (cleaned, restocked, proper setup). Provide oversight in the servery during busy times to keep food, dishware, and utensils replenished. Assist in covering for absent workers during emergencies for a period of time. Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Associate degree in restaurant management, business, or related field or equivalent plus one year of customer service/related experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to coordinate and oversee a diverse work team; strong customer service, communication, listening, and empathy while following protocols. Certifications and Licenses: ServSafe California Certification. Physical Requirements: Constant mobility; ability to move quickly between areas; frequent bending, stooping, and walking; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; ability to see and assess food quality. Working Conditions: Flexible, demanding hours; long hours; wet floors, temperature extremes, and high noise levels. Work Standards: Interpersonal skills, safety orientation, and compliance with university policies. Compensation and Benefits The expected pay range for this position is $26.85 to $30 per hour. Stanford provides pay ranges as a good faith estimate, with actual offer determined by factors including responsibilities, qualifications, location, and market considerations.
