Description:

Boater's World Manufacturing Group is seeking an experienced Gel Coat Repair Technician to join our boat manufacturing team in Chocowinity, North Carolina. This is a separate function from the Gel Coat Technician role and supports the Gel Coat Repair staffing needs identified in BWMG's production plan.

The Gel Coat Repair Technician is responsible for identifying and repairing cosmetic and structural surface imperfections in fiberglass and gelcoat components throughout the boat manufacturing process.

This is a hands-on finishing position requiring strong attention to detail and the ability to perform gelcoat matching, patching, sanding, grinding, buffing, polishing, and other repair work to produce a high-quality finished surface.

Previous professional gelcoat or fiberglass repair experience is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect fiberglass and gelcoat surfaces for cracks, chips, scratches, air voids, pinholes, blemishes, and other imperfections.
• Perform gelcoat repairs on hulls, decks, consoles, and other fiberglass boat components.
• Prepare damaged or defective areas for repair through sanding, grinding, cleaning, and other surface-preparation techniques.
• Mix gelcoat, catalysts, pigments, and related materials according to established specifications.
• Match gelcoat colors and finishes to surrounding surfaces.
• Apply gelcoat and repair materials using appropriate spray, brush, patching, or other application techniques.
• Repair chips, scratches, cracks, voids, and other cosmetic surface defects.
• Sand repaired areas through appropriate stages to achieve a smooth and consistent surface.
• Buff and polish repaired areas to blend with surrounding finished surfaces.
• Inspect completed repairs for color match, finish quality, consistency, and overall appearance.
• Rework repairs when necessary to meet established quality standards.
• Protect surrounding finished surfaces while completing repair work.
• Work closely with Gelcoat, Lamination, Assembly, Quality Control, and Final Finish teams to address defects throughout production.
• Communicate recurring defects or significant quality concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
• Properly use and maintain spray equipment, sanders, grinders, buffers, polishers, and other repair tools.
• Follow established procedures for handling gelcoat, catalysts, solvents, fiberglass materials, and other chemicals.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Follow all company safety, PPE, chemical-handling, and production procedures.

Requirements:

• Previous gelcoat repair, fiberglass repair, composite repair, marine finishing, automotive body repair, or similar experience strongly preferred.
• Experience repairing cosmetic defects in fiberglass or composite surfaces preferred.
• Knowledge of gelcoat preparation, mixing, application, sanding, buffing, and polishing techniques.
• Experience with color matching and blending preferred.
• Ability to identify surface defects and determine the appropriate repair method.
• Experience using sanders, grinders, buffers, polishers, spray equipment, and common hand tools.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to finished-product quality.
• Ability to safely work with gelcoat, catalysts, solvents, fiberglass, and related materials.
• Ability to follow established repair and quality procedures.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining production and quality expectations.
• Ability to perform physical production work throughout the shift.
• Dependable attendance and ability to work effectively as part of a manufacturing team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous boat or marine manufacturing experience.
• Professional fiberglass and gelcoat repair experience.
• Experience repairing finished boat hulls and decks.
• Experience with gelcoat color matching.
• Experience performing final-finish or cosmetic repairs on completed fiberglass products.
• Experience in marine, automotive body, RV, composites, or other finish-repair environments.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on manufacturing position involving regular work with fiberglass, gelcoat, repair materials, tools, and production equipment.

• Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
• Ability to work in and around boat hulls, decks, and other fiberglass components.
• Regular exposure to fiberglass dust, gelcoat, catalysts, solvents, chemicals, odors, and manufacturing noise.
• Ability to safely use required hand tools, power tools, sanding equipment, and finishing equipment.
• Must wear required PPE and follow all facility safety and chemical-handling procedures. xhyhwjd
