AGRICULTURAL CHEMICAL SPRAYER

RESPONSIBILITIES Select, mix and apply pesticides such as insecticides, algaecides, rodenticides, herbicides and fungicides to a variety of outdoor areas including turf, fence lines, ball diamonds, planters and shrub beds, waterways, access roads, parks, and public jurisdiction rights-of-way. Use respirators and appropriate personal protective equipment when applying pesticides as required by Cal‑OSHA, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and other regulatory agencies. Develop vegetation control spray programs and schedules for a maintenance area or region, and manage those programs including cost estimation and budget adherence with Departmental Service Orders. Maintain spray equipment in proper working order through preventive maintenance and minor repairs. Oversee and ensure compliance with label requirements. Order and issue controlled pesticides. Keep accurate records and prepare reports regarding control and use of pesticides using electronic devices and software programs. Document and verify billable hours for work performed in accordance with Departmental Service Orders and contract work. Ensure safe storage and use of pesticides in accordance with EPA, DPR, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures regulations. Provide safety training to pesticide applicators and others involved in pesticide applications. Offer technical direction for the safe and effective application of restricted and non‑restricted pesticides to a small crew of workers including Weed Hazard Pest Abatement Workers, Senior Weed Abatement Workers, Pest Control Workers, Grounds Maintenance Workers, Public Works Maintenance Workers, and Public Works Laborers. Drive and operate various vehicles such as small to large pickup trucks, crew cab trucks, and heavy vehicles with motorized spray equipment to job‑site locations. Clean facilities or sites after completing work assignments. Cover areas to specified depths with pesticides, applying knowledge of weather conditions, droplet sizes, elevation‑to‑distance ratios, and obstructions; assess work sites for sensitive areas and recommend mitigation measures. Use traps and firearms in the performance of Vertebrate Pest Programs, as needed. QUALIFICATIONS OPTION I: One (1) year of experience in the preparation and application of pesticides using high‑pressure, power‑driven spray equipment. OPTION II: Two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance and care work assisting in the preparation and application of pesticides using high‑pressure, power‑driven spray equipment. Valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) and/or Qualified Applicator License (QAL) issued by the State of California, Department of Pesticide Regulation, with categories A, B, or C. Valid California Class C Driver License required to perform job‑related essential functions. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Completion of coursework in Agriculture, Horticulture, Landscape Irrigation, Plant Science, Zoology, or Biology. Current and valid Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Penal Code 832. Pest Control Adviser License. California Department of Fish and Wildlife Trapping License. PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATION PHYSICAL CLASS IV - ARDUOUS: Frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. Positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in safety roles are included. SHIFT REQUIREMENTS Appointees required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, overtime, and holidays. EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION The examination comprises an evaluation of education, experience, and desirable qualifications weighted 100%. Applicants must achieve 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register. ELIGIBILITY Applicants processed as received; those who pass assessment placed on a list valid for 12 months, used to fill vacancies.
