The ED holding unit has patients located within the emergency department who are waiting for inpatient beds. Patients may have any medical or surgical adult diagnosis. Travelers may encounter PCU level patients. Travelers are expected to handle MS/Tele cases and to float to other areas as needed. The target patient-to-nurse ratios are 1:6 for MS/Tele or 1:4 for PCU level patients. Every other weekend is required. Contract staff may be assigned to a storm team or hurricane team. They may also be required to work during a catastrophic event or disaster. This unit has a very fast-paced environment with very ill patients. Standard medical equipment is used, including cardiac monitors and IV pumps. The unit is monitored using electronic documentation systems. The ability to float within the facility is required.
