General Summary

Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the Student Nurse Intern assists in the treatment and care of patients, focusing on their age and developmental needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care including assistance with daily hygiene such as bathing, hair care, oral hygiene, and grooming.
• Perform skin care and take precautions to prevent skin breakdown.
• Assist with physical activities including repositioning, ambulation, range of motion exercises, and transfer techniques.
• Support nutritional needs by preparing patients for meals, assisting with feeding, monitoring intake, and ensuring dietary restrictions are followed.
• Collect specimens, perform vital signs, and document intake and output accurately.
• Carry out procedures such as sit baths, postmortem care, application of ted hose, ice packs, and binders.
• Lead and encourage participation in performance improvement initiatives and teamwork.
• Perform technical nursing interventions within credentialing scope, including oxygen therapy management, catheter insertion/removal, intravenous therapy discontinuation, nasopharyngeal suctioning, dressing changes, wound care, and skin management.
• Conduct patient assessments and collaborate closely with the primary nurse.
• Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, and manage NG tube insertion and maintenance.
• Educate patients and families in coordination with the primary nurse.
• Document all patient care activities thoroughly and accurately in medical records.
• Immediately report any changes in patient condition or concerns to licensed nursing staff.

Education

Currently enrolled in a nursing program or completed nursing education but not yet licensed.

Experience

Entry-level position; no prior experience required.

Certification/License

Not applicable.

Mental/Physical Requirements

This role requires considerable mental focus, frequent walking, heavy lifting, and physical activities such as pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and occasional hostile situations. Frequent contact with blood and bodily fluids is expected, with minimal physical discomfort overall.
