Job Overview

The Pre-Sales Engineer – Managed IT partners with Solutions Architects, Sales teams, and Technology & Security Consultants to assess prospective client environments and translate business and technical needs into practical, scalable IT solutions. This role evaluates infrastructure, cloud, networking, and security technologies; develops clear recommendations, proposals, diagrams, estimates, and statements of work; and helps clients understand the path from their current environment to a stronger future state. By connecting technical discovery to solution design and supporting a smooth handoff to implementation, this role establishes the foundation for successful projects and long-term client partnerships.

Responsibilities

• Participate in Business Transformation Assessments by evaluating client infrastructure, security, cloud, and operational environments and identifying risks, gaps, and improvement opportunities.

• Develop technical recommendations across technologies such as Windows Server, virtualization, storage, networking, firewalls, identity and access management, Group Policy, Microsoft 365, and Azure.

• Design managed IT solutions that use Impact-approved technologies, align with internal standards, and address each client’s technical and business requirements.

• Create accurate technical proposals, solution diagrams, quotes, cost estimates, and statements of work that clearly define scope, assumptions, dependencies, and expected outcomes.

• Present assessment findings and proposed solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex concepts into clear business value.

• Partner with Sales, Solutions Architects, Technology & Security Consultants, implementation teams, vendors, and other managed services practices to support cohesive solution development and execution.

• Build trusted relationships with prospective clients and vendor partners through responsive communication, sound technical guidance, and a consultative approach.

• Maintain complete assessment documentation, activity records, and time entries in Impact’s designated systems while identifying opportunities to improve pre-sales tools and processes.

• Coordinate a thorough handoff to implementation and post-sales support teams, providing the documentation and context needed for successful delivery.

• Stay current on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices through ongoing training, certifications, research, and internal knowledge sharing.

Qualifications & Experience

• Five or more years of experience in IT infrastructure, networking, systems engineering, technical consulting, or a related discipline.

• Strong working knowledge of core infrastructure technologies, including Windows Server, virtualization, storage, switching, firewalls, Microsoft 365, Azure, identity and access management, and Group Policy.

• Demonstrated ability to assess complex technical environments, identify gaps and risks, and design scalable solutions aligned with client needs and industry best practices.

• Experience in a client-facing or pre-sales capacity, with the ability to establish credibility, manage expectations, and communicate technical concepts to both technical and business audiences.

• Proficiency in developing technical proposals, solution diagrams, quotes, cost estimates, and statements of work with strong attention to detail.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple assessments and priorities within established timelines.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative approach to working across Sales, technical delivery teams, managed services practices, vendors, and client stakeholders.

• Relevant industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Azure, Cisco CCNA, or comparable credentials are preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered.

Compensation

Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skillset, experience and training, licensures and/or certifications, and other organizational needs.

Impact may offer applicable incentive compensation plans depending on role and/or department.
