Med/Surg Registered Nurse Requirements

• At least 1 year of Registered Nurse experience required; 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience preferred
• Current Registered Nurse license in Illinois, or confirmation that the Illinois licensure application process has been initiated
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred
• Strong patient assessment, prioritization, communication, clinical judgment, and teamwork skills
• Ability to care for patients with medical, surgical, cardiac, respiratory, urologic, orthopedic, and general surgical diagnoses
• Flexibility to float and provide nursing support for acute-care overflow or another nearby campus when operational needs arise

Medical-Surgical RN Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult medical-surgical patients, including individuals with pneumonia, heart failure, sepsis, COPD, urologic conditions, surgical diagnoses, total joint procedures, and general surgery needs
• Complete focused and comprehensive patient assessments, develop individualized plans of care, administer medications, and evaluate patient outcomes
• Monitor patients using bedside and centralized telemetry while recognizing and escalating significant rhythm changes
• Care for stable patients receiving home-regimen BiPAP and high-flow oxygen, collaborating with the interdisciplinary care team as needed
• Partner with patient care technicians to coordinate Foley care, CHG bathing, oral care, mobility, and other essential daily care activities
• Maintain clear, timely documentation in Epic and communicate changes in patient condition to providers and the healthcare team
• Participate in unit handoffs, care planning, patient safety initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Support a positive patient experience through compassionate communication, sound clinical judgment, and dependable teamwork
