Intergenerational Engagement Coordinator
Openhouse was founded in 1998 to empower Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) older adults to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing welcoming housing, resources, high-impact direct services, and innovative community programs. As a result, Openhouse reduces isolation and empowers LGBTQIA2S++ older adults to improve their overall health, well-being, and economic security. We are dynamic and entrepreneurial on the leading edge of the growing field of aging services for LGBTQIA2S++ elders at the local, state, and national levels. The Intergenerational Engagement Coordinator is primarily responsible for coordinating Intergenerational Programs at Openhouse, including the Friendly Visitor Program and programs that increase social and emotional support for older adults through intergenerational connection.
This in-person position requires the candidate to conduct home visits, conduct assessments, complete paperwork, regularly meet in-person with community members and volunteers who are enrolled or interested in being enrolled into the Friendly Visitor and other intergenerational engagement programs.
The role requires collaboration with the Community Engagement Team to plan, coordinate, and execute a program of ongoing and one-off Intergenerational events, large and small, including creative programs. The IEC will also contribute to our wider community engagement program.
This position reports to the Manager of Intergenerational Programs.
This position requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and some / monthly weekend working and to participate in community-based activities as necessary to meet program and contractual obligations.
This position operates under grant funding through the Department of Disability and Aging Services of San Francisco and must comply with all applicable funding and regulatory requirements. Continued employment in this role is dependent upon the availability of funding and programmatic need.
The following duties are considered essential job functions under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
1. Direct Service: Participant/Community Member
· Conduct comprehensive in-home assessments to ascertain needs, interests and challenges for the community members seeking support.
· Provide high quality service and support to our older adult community members to foster and sustain relationships with the Friendly Visitor/Caller and other volunteer(s).
· Work collaboratively with the Manager of Intergenerational Programs and Volunteer Engagement colleagues to help monitor changes in community member's health and well-being and level of satisfaction with volunteer match during follow-up visits and calls.
· Work collaboratively with case manager, care navigator and staff from other departments to ensure a welcoming referral into the Friendly Visitor and other programs. Follow up with staff to keep them informed of any changes in community member health and well-being.
· Follow up on referrals received from other agencies seeking support for their community members interested in Intergenerational programming.
· Refer participants needing additional assistance: resources and referrals, case management, care navigation, Openhouse + On LOK programs as needed, supporting these processes as necessary.
· Match LGBTQ older adults with screened, trained, and committed volunteer matches.
· Coordinate creative and effective outreach efforts to identify LGBTQ+ older adults for the Friendly Visitor and other programs that can include, but not limited, to in-service presentations to social service providers and tabling at community events.
· Plan and execute a monthly program of intergeneration programs and one off activities, tailored to community need, including regular creative programs
2. Community Member/Volunteer Outreach
· Work with Volunteer Engagement colleagues to develop and implement creative and effective outreach efforts to identify and recruit diverse friendly visitor volunteers, utilizing relevant software, tabling opportunities and giving in person presentations (Employee Resource Groups, partner organizations, and other potential volunteer recruitment opportunities).
· Screen and train volunteers to ensure successful matches with LGBTQ+ older adult participants. Friendly Visitor trainings are held in-person.
· Match committed volunteers with isolated LGBTQ+ community members.
· Provide ongoing supervision and support to Friendly Visitor volunteers and others to help sustain relationships with older adult participants through support groups, individual meetings, and developing educational opportunities including skill-building and coping support to help empower Friendly Visitor volunteers.
· Work with Manager of Intergenerational programs to develop effective Friendly Visitor volunteer engagement opportunities to regularly support and motivate Friendly Visitor volunteers as well as monitor their interest and energy levels that can include but are not limited to specialized trainings, themed presentations, volunteer meetups, and volunteer socials.
3. Administrative Responsibilities
· Complete OH registration, Friendly Visitor Enrollment application, Health Assessment, and Community Member Agreements for participants enrolled in program in accordance with DAS guidelines.
· Support Manager of Intergenerational Programs in conducting program evaluations and Consumer Satisfaction surveys twice per year with community participants and volunteers to maintain high quality programming tailored to program outcomes.
· Enter data collected using internal databases and external reporting systems.
· Maintain effective planning tools for our programming, ensuring effective communication with coworkers and partner organizations
4. Mandated Reporting Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under California Welfare & Institutions Code §15630 (Dependent Adult and Elder Abuse Reporting Act).
The Intergenerational Engagement Coordinator is legally required to:
· Immediately report suspected elder or dependent adult abuse to Adult Protective Services (APS) or appropriate authorities
· Complete required written follow-up reports within statutory timelines
· Participate in mandated reporter training as required by DAS and state law
· Maintain documentation of compliance with reporting obligations
Failure to fulfill mandated reporting responsibilities may result in disciplinary action and potential legal consequences.
Minimum Qualifications
· Experience working with older LGBTQIA2S++ adults or equivalent experience working with other populations with unique socialization and service needs including but not limited to dementia and Alzheimer's disease, behavioral health, caregiver wellness, traumatic brain injury, etc.
· Sensitivity to and knowledge of the unique life experiences, challenges, and strengths of the communities supported by Openhouse's mission.
· Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills relating to LGBTQ older adults, adults with disabilities, their caregivers, families, families of choice and health professionals.
· Instructional skills to conduct Openhouse volunteer orientations, trainings, and community outreach events.
· Strong program management skills.
· Organizational skills to document and track interactions with community members and volunteers.
· Collaboration skills to maintain and foster relationships with social service providers, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders.
· Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to quickly learn software programs, online databases and tools.
· Good problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
· Excellent time management skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
· Ability to provide care coordination and linkages, as needed, for participants enrolled in Friendly Visitor program.
· Ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary team to assess consumer needs.
· Ability to receive and integrate feedback from supervisor and program team.
· Ability to develop relationships and maintain them through cooperative and team interaction.
· Ability to generate new ideas and see projects through to completion.
· Ability to act with patience, tact and courtesy in interactions with participating community members, Friendly Visitor volunteers, their families, staff and organizational partners under demanding and difficult conditions.
· Fluency in written and spoken English
Compensation & Benefits
Starting range: ($25 - $27/hour) (Pay Band: $24.70 - $32/hour ), commensurate with experience.
