Summary The Primary Purpose of the Position is: Process a variety of anatomical tissue and cytological cell samples using manual or automated techniques - which require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The location of the position is Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service - VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) - Dallas - Bonham - and Fort Worth - Texas. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen. English language proficiency: Histopathology Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education: Full four‑year college degree in an accredited science field such as clinical biology, microbiology, physiology, pre‑medical, medical lab technology, chemistry, immunology, anatomy. Or Baccalaureate degree with 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both). Or two years of higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree in a related science field. Certification: Candidates must currently possess the ASCP Board of Certification histotechnologist (HTL) certification. To be board‑eligible: (a) Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited histotechnician or histotechnology program, or (b) One year of full‑time experience in fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing, and staining in a histopathology laboratory. Non‑board‑certified candidates that are board‑eligible may be temporarily appointed under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B) for up to two years while supervised. Experience: GS‑7 level: No additional experience beyond basic requirements. GS‑9 level: One year of creditable experience equivalent to GS‑7, performing a full range of routine and specialized tests. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): GS‑7: No KSAs beyond basic requirements. GS‑9: Knowledge of laboratory information technology systems, histopathology techniques, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, ability to identify suboptimal specimens, organize and prioritize work, and apply professional anatomic pathology principles in new or difficult specialized testing. Preferred Experience: Completion of a histopathology training program. Five years’ experience as a histopathology technologist or technician. Physical Requirements: Light lifting under 15 pounds, light carrying under 15 pounds, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (2 hours), depth perception, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid may be permitted). Duties This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until June 24 2027. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be July 06 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks until 06/24/2027. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled. Applicants who are referred will be considered for 90 days; after that they must reapply. Perform routine and special histology, cytology, immunofluorescent and immunohistochemical stained slides for pathologist review. Perform a broad range of anatomic pathology procedures including embedding, cutting, staining, and immunohistochemistry processes. Perform advanced and complex laboratory procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, analyze and correct problems using scientific principles. Troubleshoot specialized lab tests, identify suboptimal issues, and resolve concerns. Maintain and document optimal functioning of anatomic laboratory equipment; calibrate, identify malfunctions, repair and perform preventive maintenance. Diagnose deviations in performance due to instrument malfunction. Document and review quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to processing activities as well as pre‑analytical and analytical test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement. Adhere to practices and regulations governing biosafety and bio‑security in the workplace. Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions. Evaluate and implement new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment and method comparison using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Interpret findings and make recommendations. Incorporate principles of educational methodology in instruction and training of new employees and trainees and in the laboratory’s in‑service/continuing education program. Communicate effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provide excellent service to customers (healthcare providers, patients, and others).
