Digital Marketing and Communications Specialist-Communications Department Starting Date: Immediately Job Description LOCATION: Central Office The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 29 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff members, including more than 1,800 teachers. JOB GOAL: The Marketing Specialist works as part of the Communications Team to enhance Kansas City, Kansas Public School’s image and support its vision of becoming one of the top 10 school districts in the nation. This individual works closely with the Communications and Marketing team to plan and implement marketing campaigns. The Digital Marketing and Communications Specialist is a key member of the Communications Team, responsible for enhancing Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools’ image and supporting its vision of becoming a top 10 school district. This role plans, executes, and analyzes multi‑channel marketing campaigns, manages digital platforms, and ensures consistent, innovative, and data‑driven communications across all audiences with a focus on both traditional and digital strategies, including website management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaigns for district programs and services. Collaborate with communications team members to coordinate brand awareness and marketing efforts. Co‑coordinate the district’s social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok) including paid social campaigns, short‑form video, and real‑time engagement. Analyze data to determine marketing campaign efficiency and recommend improvements. Ensure creative marketing materials undergo regular review and adhere to brand guidelines. Co‑coordinate internal and external electronic newsletters and manage subscriber lists. Contribute stories for staff communications tools such as Education Connection and Staff Notebook. Plan and execute initiatives to reach target audiences through radio, billboards, social media, print advertising, and provide marketing support for district‑wide special events (United Way, Superintendent’s Honor Roll, Reasons to Believe Celebration, Retirement Banquet, Convocation). Prepare marketing materials for district staff before publication, as needed. Possess basic design skills and create designs reflective of the district brand standards, including fliers, advertisements, postcards, invitations, banners, brochures, and other communications resources. Support and collaborate with the Communications Team to complete school‑wide initiatives. Assist in the development of videotaping assignments. Develop, implement, and analyze creative, multi‑channel marketing campaigns for district programs, leveraging digital, print, and emerging platforms. Co‑manage and create content for all district social media channels, monitor analytics, and recommend strategies for growth and engagement. Manage and update district website content, ensuring accuracy, accessibility (ADA compliance), and alignment with brand standards; collaborate with IT and Communications to implement improvements and new features. Optimize website content for search engines (SEO) and monitor analytics to inform content strategy and improve user experience. Coordinate and design digital newsletters and email marketing campaigns; analyze engagement metrics. Create compelling written, visual, and video content tailored to diverse audiences (students, families, staff, community). Maintain and enforce brand guidelines across all digital and print materials. Provide marketing support for internal and external communications, including crisis communications and rapid‑response messaging. Stay current on digital marketing trends, tools, and best practices; recommend and implement innovative strategies. Mentor and share expertise with team members, supporting specialization and professional growth. Monitor website traffic and user engagement using analytics tools and recommend data‑based improvements. Complete other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing or related field. Strong oral and written communication skills. Video and editing skills required. Experience writing newsletters, marketing campaigns, and advertising copy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Experience managing website content and using web content management systems (CMS). Preferred Skills Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Lightroom. Ability to work in a high‑stress environment while meeting multiple deadlines. Strong organizational skills. Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with all district staff, media personnel, parents, students, and community groups. Ability to proofread prose, graphic materials, and edit written work of others. Ability to use good judgement and maintain confidentiality.COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION
Maintains communication with school personnel, parents/guardians, internal and external customers to enhance cooperative action that meets the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.REASONING ABILITY
