Radiation Therapist

The Radiation Therapist must ensure quality patient care and maintain the highest level of patient and personnel safety.

Job responsibilities include:

• Informing the patient about their responsibility for administering ionizing radiation therapy according to the radiation oncologist's prescription and instruction.
• Checking that informed consent has been completed.
• Verifying patient identification verbally and through picture form.
• Checking calculations prior to treatment including IMPAC.
• Ensuring accurate positioning and patient comfort.
• Maintaining visual and verbal contact with the patient.
• Delivering treatment in accordance with center's protocols.
• Accurately delivering the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision after checking patient chart for daily dose, prescription, diagnosis, and consent.
• Preparing treatment room for each patient as prescribed; transferring patient safely to treatment couch.
• Maintaining skin marking as necessary.
• Being knowledgeable in tattoo techniques.
• Observing patient for unusual reactions and events and reporting occurrence to Radiation Oncologist or Nurse; assisting in emergency treatment as needed.
• Monitoring radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
• Assisting in daily quality assurance checks on treatment equipment; immediately reporting erratic machine operation to Chief Therapist.
• Assisting in tumor localization and the preparation of immobilization devices; assisting in dosimetry procedures. May assist physics in block making and calibration.
• Being knowledgeable in the use of multi-leaf collimator.
• Maintaining orderliness and efficiency of work area.
• Maintaining department records correctly; recording daily treatment chart accurately as prescribed.
• Performing patient quality assurance routinely.
• Keeping treatment and simulation rooms supplied with inventory as needed.
• Presenting oneself in a professional manner and dressing appropriately at all times in the workplace.
• Assisting in orientation of new employees.
• Providing technical direction, guidance, and explanation to others.

Qualifications:

Education:

Required: Must be a graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Program

Preferred: Associates or Bachelor's Degree

Experience:

Preferred: Six months Radiation Oncology Therapy experience or equivalent clinical experience obtained through completion of a Radiation Therapy Program

Other Skills/Knowledge:

Required:

• Trained in equipment maintenance
• General understanding of Physics, Anatomy and Physiology
• Excellent communication skills

Preferred:

• In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications

Required:

• Registry eligible for ARRT.
• Must obtain ARRT certification within 12 months of hire.
• Must be at a minimum Temporarily Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MA DPH) and obtain a permanent License within 12 months of hire

Preferred:

• LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: certified in CPR.

Pay Range:

$37.00 - $54.98

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
