Senior Equipment Technician *Revised

Job Overview Under general supervision, the Senior Equipment Technician leads, plans, schedules, and oversees the work of Equipment Technicians and Fleet Service Workers while performing the same and/or more difficult duties as those being led; ensures completion of tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures; communicates policies, procedures, and job expectations; and provides training to staff. Key Responsibilities Lead and train Equipment Technicians and Fleet Service Workers Plan, coordinate, organize, schedule, and review the work of others Provide work direction and instruction Research and evaluate work problems and recommend solutions Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing Diagnose and repair technical problems of gasoline, diesel, hybrid and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium, heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel driven generators Work independently, prioritize work, and make sound decisions Read and understand automotive and equipment operating manuals and schematics Evaluate vehicle or equipment condition and determine course of action Safely operate gasoline, diesel, hybrid and alternatively fueled vehicles to ensure proper working order Visually detect conditions that will affect the safe operation of vehicles and equipment Maintain supplies and parts inventory Perform work using acetylene and arc welding equipment Keep records and prepare shop reports Work safely in and around vehicles and enforce County safety policies and standards Required Knowledge Principles and practices of leadership, mentoring, and training Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations Operational characteristics, services, and activities of automotive or heavy equipment repair facilities Methods, materials, tools, and power equipment used in repairing, maintaining, and servicing gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium, and heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel driven generators Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Operation, maintenance, repair, and servicing of gasoline, diesel, hybrid and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium, heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, engines, and drivetrains Preventative maintenance standards for gasoline, diesel, hybrid and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium, heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel driven generators Hazmat storage and disposal requirements Principles and practices of repair cost estimates for gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium and heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel driven generators Parts, supplies, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, hybrid and alternatively fueled vehicles including automotive, medium, heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel driven generators Principles and practices related to automotive emission control systems and standards Federal, state, and local air quality compliance standards California State General Safety Orders and Construction Safety Orders relating to equipment maintenance and repair shops Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time paid experience diagnosing malfunctions and repairing and maintaining gasoline, diesel, or alternatively powered vehicles such as medium and heavy duty trucks, buses, or construction equipment. Work experience may be substituted with accredited college coursework, vocational training, or military training in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy Maintenance Equipment Repair, or Construction Equipment Repair up to two years on the basis of 2.5 semester units per month of experience. Additional Qualifications Valid California Driver License, Class C or higher. Some positions may require a Class A or B license and Hazardous Materials, Tank Vehicle, and/or Passenger endorsements within six months of appointment. Physical ability to: Observe equipment functions and shop facilities with sufficient senses Work in cramped areas and awkward positions, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach above shoulder Walk on uneven surfaces and up and down stairs Climb ladders to access large equipment Work while wearing approved personal protective equipment as required Lift, carry, and transport objects weighing up to 100 pounds with or without assistance Distinguish colors for wiring; read gauges and meters; manipulate or assemble objects with precision and coordination Work outside in all climatic conditions, including inclement or very hot and/or cold weather. Be exposed to exhaust fumes, chemicals, hazardous waste, solvents, asbestos, acids, caustics, flammable materials, and welding torches. Work around high noise levels and in tight spaces that may be hot and/or humid. Work on equipment at heights six feet and more above ground.
