Senior Accountant – Portfolio Accounting & Investment Reporting

Full-Time | In-Office | Downtown Houston

Position Overview

This position supports the wealth management and investment platform of a sophisticated organization and is not aligned with traditional family office accounting. The Senior Accountant will focus on portfolio-level accounting, investment reporting, and valuation oversight , ensuring that portfolio investments are properly accounted for on the company’s books.

This role is ideal for an accounting professional with direct experience in portfolio or fund accounting who understands how investment activity flows through corporate financial statements. The position is open due to a planned retirement and offers long-term stability within a highly established environment.

This role requires direct portfolio or fund accounting experience. Candidates whose backgrounds are limited to general ledger, operational, or transactional accounting without hands-on investment or fund exposure will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio & Investment Accounting

• Maintain accurate general ledger accounting for portfolio investments and related corporate entities in accordance with GAAP.
• Perform portfolio-level accounting across multiple asset classes, including equities, fixed income, private equity, real estate, and alternative investments.
• Record and reconcile investment activity, capital calls, distributions, and valuation changes.
• Ensure investment positions and valuations tie to custodian reports, fund statements, and third-party administrators.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements related to investment and corporate entities.
• Produce detailed investment reporting packages, including performance summaries, asset allocation analysis, and benchmarking.
• Support management reporting by translating complex investment data into clear, decision-useful information.

Collaboration & Controls

• Partner closely with portfolio managers, investment operations, and external advisors to validate transactions and reporting accuracy.
• Ensure proper accounting for intercompany activity and investment-related cash flows.
• Assist with annual audits and reviews by preparing schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation.

Process Improvement & Systems

• Contribute to enhancements in accounting processes, reporting workflows, and system automation.
• Support and optimize investment and accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Advent APX, BlackLine, Power BI, or similar tools).

Candidate Profile

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
• 4–7+ years of progressive experience in portfolio accounting, fund accounting, or investment accounting within a wealth management firm, investment manager, fund administrator, or a mid-to-large public accounting firm serving portfolio, fund, or investment management clients .
• Demonstrated, hands-on understanding of how portfolio investments are accounted for on corporate books ; candidates without direct investment or fund exposure will not be a fit.

Technical Expertise

• Strong command of GAAP, fair value measurement, and investment accounting principles.
• Experience reconciling investment activity and valuations to custodians, fund administrators, and investment managers.
• Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with investment reporting and analytics platforms is strongly preferred.
