Fall 2026 Democracy Legal Internship

About the Brennan Center The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the United States' systems of democracy and justice. The Center works on issues ranging from voting rights and campaign finance reform to mass incarceration and constitutional protections in national security policies. Internship Overview Legal interns will support both the Democracy Program and the Elections & Government Program. The Democracy Program strives to keep elections fair, representative, secure, and independent, ensuring every voter can vote safely and accessibly. The Elections & Government Program works to reform the influence of big money in politics, address corruption and improve government ethics, strengthen election administration, track misinformation, and collaborate with partners such as the Committee for Safe and Secure Elections. Responsibilities Conduct legal research and writing for amicus briefs, policy reports, campaign materials, and other advocacy documents. Draft communications to legislators, including policy briefs and position statements. Assist with public comments to federal agencies and attend coalition meetings. Create content for the Brennan Center’s website and social media fronts. Participate in assignments focused on: Voting rights—including combating practices that suppress votes or disproportionately affect communities of color. Election administration—responding to misinformation and political violence threats. Campaign finance reform and empowerment of historically disenfranchised communities. Protection of the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the courts. Elimination of partisan gerrymandering and other manipulations of electoral maps. Qualifications Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Initiative, imagination, and versatility. Passion for the Center’s policy issues. Open to candidates with diverse experiences and backgrounds, including those new to nonprofit law and policy, returning after a gap, or seeking a career transition. Law students enrolled in Fall 2026. Hours and Pay Approximately 10–15 hours per week, paid $20.90 per hour. Internship duration: September – December 2026.
