Director Of Safety And Security
There is currently one (1) full-time position available, eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week, twelve (12) months per year. The tentative work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. An eligibility list will be established to fill current vacancies, and fill future vacancies for the next 6 months. Applications for this position will be accepted online only starting Friday, August 21, 2026, until Monday, September 14, 2026 4:30pm. *Applicants will be sent notification via e-mail only* Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, Administrative Services, the Director of Safety and Security plans, organizes, directs, supervises, and evaluates a comprehensive District-wide safety and security program designed to protect students, staff, visitors, and property and to support effective teaching and learning. The Director provides strategic and day-to-day operational leadership for campus safety, field patrol, dispatch and communications, physical security, emergency preparedness, threat assessment, investigations, and crime prevention initiatives; develops and implements policies, procedures, and systems; and serves as the District's subject matter expert and primary liaison to law enforcement, fire, emergency management, and community partners regarding safety and security. The Director is responsible for planning and managing departmental operations, including the daily deployment and supervision of safety personnel, budget development and administration, performance management, equipment and technology oversight, and long-range program planning in alignment with federal, state, and local requirements and District goals.
The Director of Safety and Security is a management-level classification with District-wide responsibility for both the strategic leadership and day-to-day administration of comprehensive safety and security programs, including policy development, field operations, emergency management, physical security, investigations, strategic planning, and interagency coordination. Incumbents in this classification exercise a high degree of independent judgment and decision-making in matters that may carry significant legal, financial, and reputational risk for the District. This classification serves as the District's principal management position for safety and security and combines District-wide program leadership with direct responsibility for departmental operations. The incumbent establishes priorities, policies, procedures, and long-range plans; directs emergency management and physical security strategies; advises Cabinet and the Governing Board; and oversees daily field patrol, dispatch, investigations, staff deployment, training, equipment, and campus safety activities. The Director retains accountability for program outcomes, legal compliance, and alignment with the District's Comprehensive School Safety Plans while exercising independent judgment in routine operations and sensitive or emergency situations. Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public administration, emergency management, security management, or a closely related field. Up to two years of k-12 school district supervisory-related experience, in addition to the required experience listed below, may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. At minimum, an Associate degree or equivalent is required. Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in safety, security, or law enforcement, including at least three years in a supervisory or management capacity, preferably in a K–12 school district or similar public sector environment. Employees in this classification work in an office, in student homes, classrooms and various community sites; work both inside and outside, in varying weather conditions, with exposure to verbal abuse, harassment, potential physical hazards when intervening in anti-social, illegal activity, and/or physical fights or confrontations, in the absence of immediate supervision, and in direct contact with students, the public, and District personnel. May work over 40 hours a week, and work a flexible schedule on-call, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit, stoop/bend, reach overhead, push/pull, climb stairs and ramps, use both hands and/or legs simultaneously, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., use fingers repetitively, use both hands simultaneously, speak clearly, hear normal conversation, and see small details, drive a vehicle, radio, use a computer, other office equipment, and telephone.
In accordance with Education Code Section 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of one year during which time the employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory performance. No employee shall attain permanent status in the classified service until he or she has completed a probationary period in a class. An employee may be released at any time during the probationary period. This classification is designated at the management level. Management level employees earn twenty-four (24) vacation days per year. A maximum of eight (8) days per year are allowed to be banked, not to exceed a total of forty (40) days. For twelve month employees, fifteen (15) paid holidays are earned each year. The District provides two (2) floating holidays per fiscal year and new employees may use these days upon completion of probation. One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. The District provides eligible employees major medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Educational stipend: Effective July 1, 2023, all classified Confidential/Supervisory and Classified Management employees who hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in excess of the minimum educational level required for their position shall be provided with one annual stipend which shall be provided as follows: Bachelors Degree: $500 annually or Masters Degree: $1000 annually. New employees are normally placed at Step A of the appropriate salary range for this classification. If the hiring authority recommends advanced salary step placement to the Personnel Director, then the new employee's eligibility will be determined in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule and Regulation 17.2.1. The Personnel Commission shall have final approval on any initial salary step placement recommendations. Contact the Personnel Commission office for further information if you are hired.
