Weekend Hospital Cook

Pay: $19 - $21 per hour

Shift: Saturday and Sunday, 5:30am - 1pm

Job Description

The Hospital Cook prepares high-quality meals for patients, employees, and guests in a hospital kitchen, ensuring all food meets standards for taste, appearance, and temperature. This role assembles necessary food and non-food items for each shift, follows established recipes and production forecasts, and supports a clean, safe, and organized work environment while working Saturday and Sunday early-morning shifts.

Responsibilities

• Prepare quality foods for patients, employees, and guests in accordance with the daily menu and established departmental recipes.
• Assemble all food and non-food items required for use during the shift to ensure smooth and efficient meal service.
• Cook and bake food for meal service according to the days menu, maintaining quality assurance standards for appearance, taste, and temperature.
• Prepare menu items based on forecasted or tallied quantities, minimizing waste and ensuring sufficient portions for service.
• Ensure all food is prepared and ready prior to customer service meetings and meal times.
• Document the quantity and disposition of leftovers in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
• Operate departmental kitchen equipment in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner, following all safety guidelines.
• Report malfunctioning, damaged, or unsafe equipment promptly to the appropriate supervisor or department contact.
• Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, neat, organized, and sanitary condition throughout the shift.
• Complete special and detailed cleaning projects as assigned, including proper disposal of trash and obvious clutter.
• Assist with the orientation of new staff members by demonstrating basic job duties and proper kitchen procedures.
• Attend in-services, departmental meetings, training sessions, and line-up meetings as required.
• Deliver prepared food to patients on trays, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Perform general cleaning tasks in the kitchen and related service areas to support infection control and safety standards.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in food production within a professional kitchen environment.
• Hands-on experience as a line cook, prep cook, or in similar food preparation roles.
• Strong food preparation skills, including cooking and baking to standardized recipes.
• Ability to follow established departmental recipes and production guidelines accurately.
• Capability to manage multiple menu items simultaneously while maintaining quality standards.
• Attention to detail in portioning, presentation, taste, and temperature of prepared foods.
• Ability to operate common kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
• Commitment to maintaining cleanliness, organization, and sanitation in all work areas.
• Reliability in working early-morning weekend shifts and meeting scheduled hours.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in food service within a hospital or healthcare setting is beneficial.
• Experience in general food service operations, including tray service and patient meal delivery.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with strict food safety and sanitation standards.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training, in-services, and departmental meetings.
• Ability to support and mentor new team members by demonstrating core job responsibilities.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital kitchen and involves working Saturday and Sunday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You will work in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment focused on patient care, food safety, and sanitation. The position requires standing for extended periods, operating commercial kitchen equipment, preparing and transporting food trays to patients, and performing routine and detailed cleaning tasks. You follow hospital and departmental guidelines for hygiene, safety, and professional appearance while working in close coordination with other kitchen and patient service staff.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington D.C., DC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
