Description
This is general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Police Officers perform work in accordance with the departmental rules and regulations and receive assignments and instructions from police personnel of higher rank. All applicants must meet all requirements of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission and those of the Plantation Police Department.

Key Requirements

To Apply, Applicants Must Meet the Following Requirements:

1. U.S. Citizen: Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old at the time of application.
2. Valid Florida Driver's License: Must have a good driving record.
   • No license suspensions in the last 2 years.
   • No more than 2 suspensions in the last 5 years (unless due to error).
3. No Felony Convictions: Must never have been convicted of a felony or any crime that would question your moral character.
4. Certification and Written Test:
   • If certified by the FDLE, applicants must provide their FDLE certification and pass the Basic Motor Skills and Swim Test (if not previously submitted).
   • If not currently certified as a police officer by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), applicants must possess certification from another federal or state law enforcement agency and submit the academy curriculum .
   • Applicants must also pass the following tests administered by the Broward College Criminal Justice Institute (unless exempt due to qualifications):
     • Basic Motor Skills Test (must be completed within 6 months before application).
     • Swim Test (no time limit).
     • Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJ BAT) (must pass within 4 years). Note: The CJ BAT test is waived for applicants with an Associate's Degree or higher, or honorable military discharge .

Disqualifying Factors

Applicants may be disqualified if they have:

• DUI or DWI
• Leaving the scene of an accident (with or without injury)
• Failure to report an accident involving injuries
• Failure to render aid at an accident
• Vehicular homicide
• Fleeing or eluding a Police Officer
• Reckless driving
• More than 2 license suspensions during a 5 year period
• Any more than 5 moving violations in past 5 years
• An applicant who shows a history of "at fault" accidents
• Any failure to disclose any Driver's License information without reasonable explanation
• Three (3) moving violations committed during any 12 month period within Five (5) years of application date
• No visible tattoos above the collar are permitted while on duty
• Body ornamentation shall not be visible or exposed while on duty

4. State Police Standards Certificate: State certification as a Police or Corrections Officer including certificates, diplomas, grade reports, transcripts and curricula, which will be used to evaluate for equivalency of training.

5 . If you have ever been arrested or charged with any crime as an adult, a copy of the court's disposition MUST be included with the application.


Testing Selection Process :

1. Testing Requirements : Applicants must pass all required pre-employment tests, which may take up to one year to complete. If an applicant fails any part of the process, they will not move forward in the selection process but may reapply after one year from the failure date.
2. Required Tests :
   • CJ BAT Test : Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (must pass within 4 years).
   • Basic Motor Skills Test and Swim Test : Applicants must present a signed Physician's Statement for the Basic Motor Skills Test, completed by a Florida-licensed physician within 90 days prior to the test.
3. The City of Plantation will facilitate testing after your application is reviewed and you've passed the oral interview.
4. Oral Board : Only applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will proceed to the oral interview.
5. Required Testing : Certified applicants by FDLE only need to take the Basic Motor Skills and Swim Test (if not already submitted). Non-certified applicants must complete all required tests.
6. CVSA Examination : Following a conditional job offer, applicants will undergo a polygraph examination assessing:
   • Past criminal activity.
   • Honesty and completeness of application statements.
   • Use or sale of illegal drugs.
7. Background Investigation : Applicants must sign a release for a background check, including criminal history, moral character, employment history, and military service.
8. Psychological Evaluation : Applicants will undergo a psychological evaluation to assess their mental and emotional fitness for the position.
9. Medical Examination : Applicants will be examined by a designated physician. If deemed physically unfit for the role, the conditional offer will be revoked.
10. Drug Testing : All applicants will be tested for drugs and alcohol. If any unauthorized substances are detected, the conditional offer will be revoked.
11. Personal Interview : Applicants who pass the previous steps will be scheduled for a final interview with the Chief of Police.

Work Environment

BENEFITS/EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
CONTRACT


All Police Officer applicants hired by the City of Plantation are required to sign a two (2) year contract. The contract states that if the applicant should leave the City of Plantation's police force anytime between the signing of the agreement and 24 months from State Certification as a Police Officer, he/she agrees to reimburse the City the expenses the department incurred in hiring and training the applicant.


PROBATIONARY PERIOD


A probationary Police Officer must successfully pass Florida Police Standards and Training Commission Police Officer Academy and successfully pass the Police Officer State Certification Examination. ALL new employees serve a one (1) year probationary period from date of appointment as Police Officer.


PAY CHECK


Issued bi-weekly on every other Friday; Direct Deposit is mandatory for all new employees with a Credit Union or Banking Institution.


INSURANCE COVERAGE

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment
One times Annual Earnings, rounded to the next higher $1,000. (Policy paid for by the City). Maximum of $50,000.


Hospitalization, Major Medical,Dental and Vision
The Employee pays a portion of the cost for themselves and for dependent coverage at a rate established by Administration.
Dependent Coverage: spouses are eligible only if they do not have entitlement to participate in another employer's group medical plan or Medicare.


Police Officer's Accidental Death and Dismemberment
$167,505 death and dismemberment policy for Police Officers. (Policy paid for by the City.) While at work only


Long Term Disability
Available for the first five (5) years of employment: 60% of monthly salary/$5,000 max.


RETIREMENT


While in an uncertified Police Officer status, mandatory contribution of 4 % of salary to the General Employee's Pension Plan. Upon achieving a certified Police Officer status, mandatory contribution of 8% of pensionable wages with up to 50 hours of overtime, shift differential and assignment pay. Completion of 25 years of credited service regardless of age.


HOLIDAYS


Eleven paid holidays per year as declared by City Council each year.


PERSONAL DAY


All full-time employees will be given the benefit of one (1) personal day per calendar year. Cannot be used until employed 6 months; can only be used with your Department Head's approval; cannot be carried over from one year to the next.


SAFE DRIVING DAYS


Two days per year - non-cumulative


SICK LEAVE


13 days per year
Accrues 4 hours at end of each bi-weekly pay period. Maximum accrual is 480 hours.

EDUCATIONAL REIMBURSEMENT


City reimburses 100% tuition and required books for pre-approved courses that obtain
Grades "A or B"; 75% tuition reimbursement for grade "C"; paid at state rate unless class is not otherwise available; eligible for benefit after one year as certified Police Officer.

Made available to employees through payroll deduction upon employee's request.
