Job Title: Weekend Hospital Kitchen Cook (Saturday & Sunday)

Job Description

This weekend role focuses on preparing high-quality meals for patients, employees, and guests in a hospital kitchen. You will cook and bake according to the daily menu, assemble food and non-food items for your shift, and ensure that every dish meets standards for appearance, taste, and temperature. You will also support safe equipment use, maintain a clean and sanitary work area, and occasionally help orient new team members.

Responsibilities

• Prepare high-quality food for patients, employees, and guests in accordance with the daily menu.
• Assemble all required food and non-food items at the start and throughout the shift to ensure smooth meal service.
• Cook and bake menu items according to established departmental recipes, ensuring proper appearance, taste, and temperature.
• Prepare menu items based on forecasted or tallied quantities to minimize waste and maintain consistent supply.
• Ensure food is fully prepared and ready before customer service meetings and prior to scheduled meal times.
• Document the quantity and disposition of leftover food in line with departmental policies.
• Operate kitchen and departmental equipment safely, efficiently, and in an orderly manner.
• Report malfunctioning, damaged, or unsafe equipment promptly to a supervisor.
• Maintain work areas, equipment, and tools in a clean, neat, organized, and sanitary condition.
• Complete special and detailed cleaning projects as assigned, including disposing of trash and obvious clutter as needed.
• Assist with the orientation of new staff members by demonstrating basic job duties and standard procedures.
• Attend in-service sessions, departmental meetings, training sessions, and line-up meetings as required.
• Deliver food trays to patients in a courteous and efficient manner, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Support general kitchen operations, including food preparation, line service, and cleaning tasks as needed.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in food production within a professional kitchen environment.
• Hands-on experience as a line cook, including cooking and plating meals to order or according to a set menu.
• Strong food preparation skills, including chopping, measuring, mixing, and portioning ingredients.
• Ability to follow established departmental recipes and standardized procedures consistently.
• Capability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced kitchen, including cooking, baking, and assembling trays.
• Knowledge of safe operation of kitchen equipment and adherence to food safety and sanitation standards.
• Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area throughout the shift.
• Comfortable interacting with patients and staff while delivering food trays in a hospital setting.
• Reliability and punctuality for weekend shifts, specifically Saturday and Sunday.
• Ability to attend required in-service trainings, departmental meetings, and line-up meetings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience as a cook, prep cook, line cook, or in a similar food service role.
• Experience in hospital, healthcare, or institutional food service environments.
• Familiarity with documenting leftover quantities and following departmental policies for food handling.
• Experience assisting with onboarding or orienting new kitchen staff.
• Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with kitchen and service staff.
• Attention to detail in food presentation, portion control, and temperature management.

Work Environment

This position is based in a hospital kitchen and operates on a weekend schedule, specifically Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. You will work in a fast-paced, structured environment that requires standing for extended periods, moving between kitchen stations, and transporting food trays to patient rooms. The role involves regular use of commercial kitchen equipment, adherence to strict food safety and sanitation standards, and frequent cleaning tasks, including detailed cleaning projects and routine trash removal. You will wear appropriate kitchen attire and follow all safety and hygiene protocols required in a hospital food service setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
