Build Great Work. Lead a Crew. Learn a Specialty Trade. Sutter Home & Hearth is looking for an experienced tradesperson to join our team as a Lead Installation Technician / Crew Lead . This is a hands-on position for someone who can lead a small crew in performing high-quality residential construction and mechanical installation work.

Fireplace or hearth industry experience is not required. If you have strong experience in HVAC installation, finish carpentry, residential remodeling, mechanical installation, or a similar skilled trade, we want to hear from you. We will train the right person on fireplaces, gas piping, specialty products, and our installation methods.

We’re looking for someone who takes pride in craftsmanship and has the work ethic needed to meet production goals. Completing a project quickly with poor fit and finish isn’t a success, and neither is taking twice as long to make something perfect. A successful Lead Installer plans the work, keeps the crew productive leading from the front, solves on-site problems, and delivers finished work everyone can be proud of.

You will work hands-on alongside another installer while taking ownership of the project, including reporting, communicating with customers and other trades, and making sure the project is completed safely, efficiently, and correctly.

About Sutter Home & HearthFounded in 1979, Sutter Home & Hearth is an established local business serving homeowners, builders, architects, and other clients throughout the greater Seattle area. We install and service fireplaces, stoves, fire pits, BBQs, and related hearth and outdoor products in new construction, remodels, and existing homes. We have a well-earned reputation for performing complex and high detail work with excellent results.

Our field teams are supported by full-time estimators and office staff who help ensure projects are vetted and prepared before our installers arrive on site. We teach the specifics of our products, and provide industry-specific training and tools.

What You’ll Do As a Lead Installation Technician, you will:
  • Lead a small installation crew while working hands-on.
  • Install, uninstall, and service/troubleshoot fireplaces, stoves, venting, fire pits, BBQs, and related products.
  • Perform both rough-in and finish-stage installation work in new construction, remodels, and occupied homes.
  • Plan and sequence daily work so projects are completed efficiently without sacrificing safety or quality.
  • Read and follow construction plans, specifications, schematics, product manuals, and manufacturer requirements, and perform work in a code-compliant manner.
  • Identify jobsite problems early, determine appropriate solutions, and communicate issues before they become larger problems.
  • Work through technical and product challenges using manufacturer and internal support when needed.
  • Coordinate and communicate professionally with homeowners, builders, site leads, project managers, inspectors, other trades, and our team.
  • Produce clean, straight, level, properly-fitted work with high attention to finish quality.
  • Direct and develop your installation crew.
  • Track job materials, inventory, and supplies and provide project photos, documentation, and job reports.
  • Coordinate inspection requirements when applicable.
  • Educate customers on the safe operation and care of their new products.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and hazard-free jobsite and work vehicle.
  • Perform other installation, warehouse, and operational duties as needed.
What Success Looks LikeOur best Lead Installers take ownership of the entire job—not just their individual tasks. Someone who will succeed in this role:
  • Cares about both craftsmanship and productivity .
  • Looks ahead, anticipates problems, and plans the work rather than simply reacting.
  • Takes responsibility when something doesn’t go according to plan and cares about making it right.
  • Knows when to solve a problem independently and when to ask for help.
  • Communicates problems rather than hoping they go away or assuming someone else will handle it.
  • Understands that decisions should serve the customer, project, and team as a whole , not simply what’s easiest for one individual.
  • Treats customers, coworkers, other trades, and project partners professionally.
  • Takes pride in leaving behind work that looks as good as it performs.
  • Can lead another installer without standing back and simply directing the work.
  • Looks for ways to make the crew and company more effective on future projects.
The Background We’re Looking For If you’re an excellent tradesperson who has never installed a fireplace, we still want to hear from you! We care more about your hands-on construction experience, mechanical aptitude, communication, problem solving, leadership ability, and attitude .

Strong candidates typically have:
  • 5+ years of hands-on skilled-trade, mechanical installation, or residential construction experience in both rough-in and finish-stages.
  • Experience independently completing installation or construction projects.
  • Experience leading or training at least one other crew member.
  • Experience following codes and reading and working from detailed plans, specifications, schematics, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong experience using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Experience working directly with homeowners, customers, contractors, or other project stakeholders.
  • High attention and care to getting the details right and finish quality.
  • A safety-first mindset; you’ll work on ladders and roofs, and with gas and fire.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A reputation for being dependable and punctual
Relevant backgrounds could include:
  • HVAC installation
  • Finish carpentry
  • Residential remodeling
  • Mechanical equipment installation
  • Plumbing or gas-related installation
  • Fireplace/hearth installation
  • Other skilled residential construction trades
Physical & Other RequirementsThis position requires the ability to:
  • Safely lift and move heavy, large equipment and materials.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, and on roofs of various heights.
  • Repeatedly walk stairs, kneel, bend, squat, reach, on truck and in residential construction environments.
  • Work safely in both active construction sites and finished/occupied homes.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable for operation of a company vehicle. Drive safely and cautiously while representing the company.
  • Communicate effectively in English with customers, coworkers, and project stakeholders.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Compensation $36–$46/hour, depending on experience and demonstrated ability, plus overtime and bonus opportunities.

The range is intended to recognize different levels of relevant experience:

  • Candidates entering from an adjacent trade who require more hearth-specific training may fall toward the lower portion of the range.
  • Experienced lead installers who can independently run projects and crews will generally fall toward the middle or upper portion.
  • Exceptional candidates who bring strong leadership, troubleshooting, customer-management, and installation capabilities may qualify for the top of the range.
Schedule
  • Full-time
  • Monday through Friday (no regularly scheduled weekends)
  • Day shift
  • Overtime as needed
Work LocationIn-person at customer homes and construction sites throughout the greater Seattle area, with work originating from Sutter Home & Hearth.
