About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Psych Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Psychiatric Unit - Pediatric Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7P-7A Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required; Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred. License: ME State License required. Certifications: BLS; MOAB obtained on site as part of orientation. Must-Have: De-escalation experience; experience with physical restraints; comfortability with running groups; medication passes; documentation skills. Description: As soon as possible start needed. Simplified interviews will occur, followed by manager approval. Floating between pediatric and adult units may be required. Facility is a free-standing acute inpatient center with contracted emergency services available nearby. All patients will come from the emergency department and must be medically cleared. This facility rarely has lines, drains, tubes, etc. The unit has both involuntary and voluntary admissions. Pediatric patients range in age from 5-18 years old. Adult patients are 18 years and older, including geriatric populations. Common pediatric diagnoses include, but are not limited to, eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adult patients typically present with diagnoses such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder; eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety may also be seen. There are no forensic patients or inmates at this facility, which is secured but not to the extent of holding patients under arrest. Seclusion rooms will be utilized when necessary. Occasionally, patients with substance use disorder or who are detoxing may be observed, provided they have been medically cleared. The facility offers traditional medical and psychiatric care, along with specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens. Patient ratios for Registered Nurses are 1:5-6 during day shifts and 1:13 at night with resource support. Psych Tech staffing includes 6 Psych Techs during the day for pediatrics and 2 Psych Techs at night; for adults, staffing is 2 Psych Techs during both day and night shifts. Support on the unit includes a nurse supervisor available in the evenings and on weekends, and a nurse manager during the day. Management is open to addressing any issues faced by staff. There is a house administrator available overnight and on weekends. Charge nurses may have patient assignments but will also provide leadership. Psych Techs and a contracted phlebotomist are available for lab draws. A nurse practitioner is on-site until 1600 and is on call overnight. Psychiatrists conduct daily rounds and are available on call overnight. Occupational therapists are present seven days a week, operating from 0800-1630. Security is onsite but will not respond to patient escalations; staff from all units will manage these situations. The charting system in use is Cerner, and the medication dispensing system is Pyxis. Floating may occur between pediatric and adult units. Travelers should be aware of heavy snow conditions in winter. In case of an escalation, there will be a code leader to assign roles while verbally de-escalating the patient. Travelers may have the opportunity to act as a code leader if comfortable. Debriefing forms must be completed after incidents, and management will support these situations. Training in de-escalation techniques will be available, including scenario-based training every other week if needed.
