Role Description
The Head of Commercial Medcoms will lead the U.S. commercial scientific communications strategy for Abivax's lead investigational therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This individual will be responsible for developing the foundational scientific narrative, disease-state education platform, and customer-facing scientific communications that support launch readiness, commercialization, and long-term brand growth.
Working in close partnership with Medical Affairs, this leader will translate complex clinical data, disease science, and unmet patient needs into compelling, compliant, and customer-centered educational strategies and content for healthcare professionals and, where appropriate, patients. The role will ensure scientific integrity and consistency across commercial initiatives while leading disease-state education, congress strategy, thought leader engagement, Disease State Education (DSE) speaker programs, and the development of scientifically grounded commercial content to support successful launch and ongoing brand performance.
As a key member of the Commercial Leadership Team, the Head of Commercial Medical Communications will serve as the primary commercial liaison to Medical Affairs, ensuring alignment in scientific strategy, messaging, and educational priorities. This leader will partner closely with HCP Marketing, Patient Marketing, Medical Affairs, Sales Leadership, Commercial Operations, Market Access, Regulatory, Legal, and Compliance to deliver an integrated, scientifically grounded customer engagement strategy that supports launch excellence and consistent execution across commercial touchpoints.
The position will also be responsible for building Commercial Scientific Communications capabilities, leading agency partners, and driving execution excellence throughout the pre-launch, launch, and growth phases of obefazimod.
Responsibilities, Assignments, and Tasks
- Lead Commercial Scientific Communications Strategy
- Develop and lead the U.S. Commercial Scientific Communications strategy to support brand objectives, launch readiness, and long-term commercial success.
- Establish the disease-state education platform, including the unmet need narrative, scientific positioning, and educational approach for ulcerative colitis and the broader IBD landscape.
- Translate clinical evidence, disease biology, and evolving treatment paradigms into clear, compelling, and scientifically accurate content that advances disease understanding and appropriate product use.
- Develop integrated scientific communications across commercial channels by leveraging customer insights, market research, competitive intelligence, and emerging scientific data.
- Establish performance metrics to evaluate the impact of scientific communications and continuously optimize educational strategies and customer engagement.
- Lead Disease-State Education and Scientific Engagement
- Lead the strategy, development, and execution of disease-state education initiatives that advance understanding of inflammatory bowel disease, unmet medical need, and evolving treatment approaches.
- Develop scientific communication platforms and educational content for healthcare professionals, with appropriate adaptation for patient education and disease awareness initiatives.
- Lead commercial congress strategy and Disease State Education (DSE) Speaker Bureau programs, including scientific content, educational programming, speaker engagement, and customer outreach.
- Partner with Medical Affairs to lead commercial thought leader engagement, gather customer insights, and refine scientific and educational priorities.
- Partner with HCP Marketing and Commercial Training to ensure aligned scientific messaging and equip the field organization with accurate, compelling educational resources.
- Serve as the Strategic Commercial Partner to Medical Affairs
- Serve as the primary commercial liaison to Medical Affairs, ensuring alignment on scientific strategy, educational priorities, evidence generation, and customer engagement.
- Partner with Medical Affairs to translate emerging clinical evidence into differentiated, compliant scientific communications while maintaining scientific integrity.
- Ensure a consistent scientific narrative across HCP Marketing, Patient Marketing, Commercial Training, Sales, and other customer-facing functions.
- Collaborate on congress strategy, advisory boards, publication planning, and scientific insight generation to align commercial activities with evolving evidence and customer needs.
- Foster strong collaboration between Commercial and Medical Affairs to enable coordinated planning, shared priorities, and seamless execution.
- Drive Cross-Functional Leadership and Commercial Excellence
- Serve as the Commercial Scientific Communications lead on the cross-functional brand team, contributing to brand planning, launch readiness, and commercialization strategy.
- Partner with HCP Marketing, Patient Marketing, Medical Affairs, Sales, Commercial Operations, Market Access, Regulatory, Legal, and Compliance to deliver integrated commercial initiatives.
- Lead external agency partnerships supporting creative development, congress activities, and educational programming to ensure high-quality execution and operational excellence.
- Provide strategic recommendations and executive communications informed by customer insights, scientific trends, and market dynamics.
- Build scalable scientific communications capabilities, processes, and best practices that support launch excellence and long-term commercial success.
Qualifications
- Master's degree and ideally 7+ years of commercial or marketing experience; or
- Bachelor's degree and ideally 10+ years of commercial or marketing experience.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of leadership experience, including direct people management and/or leading complex cross-functional initiatives within a biopharmaceutical or healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated success building high-performing teams, influencing senior stakeholders, managing resources, and driving execution across multiple functions.
- Leadership experience may be concurrent with the required commercial and marketing experience.
Technical Skills/Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in gastroenterology, immunology, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or other specialty care markets strongly preferred.
- Experience leading patient marketing strategies within the biopharmaceutical industry, including omnichannel engagement, digital marketing, and TV.
- Strong track record supporting successful product launches, pre-launch planning, launch readiness, or commercialization efforts for specialty pharmaceutical brands.
- Expertise in developing and implementing integrated customer engagement strategies across personal, digital, and non-personal channels to drive awareness, adoption, and business performance.
- Experience in creating impactful promotional campaigns.
- Proven ability to recruit, develop, and lead high-performing marketing teams while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Deep understanding of customer engagement principles, omnichannel strategy, digital marketing, customer insights, and marketing performance analytics.
Leadership/Behavioral Skills
- Demonstrated success partnering with internal stakeholders to align strategy, customer engagement plans, and execution priorities.
- Experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives and influencing decision-making across Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Regulatory, and other key stakeholder groups.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across HCP and patient marketing functions to ensure coordinated experience and consistent stakeholder engagement strategy.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and strategic planning skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and drive organizational alignment.
- History of delivering measurable results in dynamic, fast-paced environments characterized by high visibility, evolving priorities, and significant accountability.
- Capable of balancing long-term strategic thinking with rigorous execution, operational excellence, and attention to detail.
