Shreveport is the educational, commercial and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region, where Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. It is the location of Centenary College of Louisiana, Louisiana State University Shreveport, Louisiana Tech University Shreveport, Southern University at Shreveport, and Louisiana Baptist University. Its neighboring city Bossier City is the location of Bossier Parish Community College. The city forms part of the I-20 Cyber Corridor linking Shreveport and Bossier City, Ruston, Grambling, and Monroe to Dallas and Tyler, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia. The Facility – Overton Brooks VA Medical Center Overton Brooks VAMC provides health care services at 5 locations in Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and east Texas. Facilities include the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and 4 community-based outpatient clinics in Shreveport and Monroe, Louisiana; Longview, Texas; and Texarkana, Arkansas. Responsibilities

Position Overview (duties may include, but are not limited to)

• Maintain patient/resident confidentiality and a safe patient/resident care environment, including familiarity with requirements such as medication administration, patient/resident/family education, discharge process, restraint usage, hazardous waste disposal, etc., as defined by The Joint Commission and all other VA regulatory bodies (i.e. Long Term Care Institute and Office of Inspector General).
• Provide patient/resident-centered care by performing the following tasks:
• Assess the health care needs of the patient/resident and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals
• Assess and act on significant changes in the patient's/resident's health condition
• Carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks
• Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient/resident medical record
• Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and in accordance with policy and procedure.
• Identify and act on predictable needs of the patient/resident
• Meet the health care needs of patient/resident by assessing and assisting the patient/resident to meet expressed needs
• Meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and/or families
• Prioritize and complete tasks within the RN's assigned shift
• Update patient/resident care plans
• Notify assigned physician of any changes in condition
• Report incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager of the unit they are assigned; or designated off-shift nursing leadership
• Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
• Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens
• Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis
• Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly
• Handles patient documentation
• Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery
• Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
• Conducts pre- and post-operative education
• Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team
• Takes and monitors patients' vital signs
• Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed
• Provides basic, bedside care
• Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
• Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse
• Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol
• Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
• Preps operating room for patient/procedure
• Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology
• Monitors patients' physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum
• Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation
• Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

Qualifications

• Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred) from an accredited program, college, or university.
• Hold a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
• Has been practicing actively as an RN for at least the last two years.
• Capable of providing complex and comprehensive nursing care for adult medical and surgical patients.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certifications.
• Has been actively practicing as a registered nurse in an OR or PACU for one (1) year; or has been actively practicing in an acute and long-term setting for one year.
