The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a highly qualified individual to join our tenure track or non-tenure clinical track (consistent with clinical experience and research interest) in our Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS) Division. Rank will be commensurate with experience. Participation in clinical and educational activities of the division, including our fellowship, is required. The applicant must be committed to fellow, resident, and medical student education and patient care.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The department includes over 70 faculty, 24 residents, 12 or more fellows and many staff. Our department's strength lies in its interdisciplinary team, which includes physicians, nurse midwives, advanced practice providers, and others. We are committed to excellence in education through a competency-based residency curriculum, mentoring clinical and research efforts, and supporting four ACGME-accredited fellowship programs and a Clinical Nurse Midwife training program. Additionally, we work closely with the UI Departments and programs in Urology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Physical Therapy, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and others. We are the only academic health system in Iowa and are looked to as the leaders in healthcare for all Iowans.

Arguably the most distinguished member of the department, Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH serves as the vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. She brings a wealth of expertise in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) and advocacy for our department. Her background ensures a strong focus on women’s health, maternal care, and emerging infectious diseases in pregnancy, which are critical areas in medical education and research. Her leadership is particularly beneficial in addressing health disparities and improving maternal health outcomes.

Our chair and Department Executive Officer Christian Pettker, MD, is dedicated to the growth and success of our department. He is a key supporter for the maintained success and growth of the URPS division.

Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery

Our faculty practice encompasses both inpatient and outpatient activities, highlighting our role as Iowa’s only quaternary academic referral center for urogynecology. Inpatient responsibilities include overseeing postsurgical patients and consults. In our outpatient clinics, we provide comprehensive care for the full spectrum of urogynecology. Our care locations include:

•           Two hospitals, encompassing three operating room facilities

•           Four outpatient locations, including two outreach clinics

Our ACGME-accredited fellowship trains 2-3 fellows at any time. Our clinical, educational and research activities are strengthened by close collaborations with urology, colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, geriatrics, and physical therapy.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

• MD or DO degree (or foreign graduate equivalent)



• Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology



• Completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in URPS

• Licensure in the state of Iowa



• Excellent skills in patient management and interdisciplinary team care



• Strong oral and written communication



• Demonstrated ability to teach URPS fellows, obstetrics and gynecology residents, and medical students



• Clinical or laboratory research is required for a tenure track appointment.

• Board certified or board eligible with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in URPS

• A strong commitment to and experience in surgical education of residents and fellows is of interest to the division and department.



• Academic interests and activity are encouraged, but research is not required on the clinical track.



• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
