Advanced Practice Provider Pediatric Hospital Medicine

The Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Service serves pediatric patients with acute care needs in the new free‑standing Children’s Tower at Children’s Hospital of Richmond. CHoR provides tertiary and quaternary care to Richmond and beyond as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, Pediatric Burn Center, and Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center. The PHM Team is comprised of Pediatric Hospitalists and Advanced Practice Providers who provide care for children with a variety of medical or surgical needs. The APPs typically work 12‑hour rotating shifts, facilitating a team approach to providing best practices. There are many opportunities to learn and grow in an academic setting through patient care, passionate colleagues, and didactic sessions led by faculty and fellows. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP—NP, PA) provides high‑quality medical and/or surgical patient care, delivering diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive services on a collaborative APP/Physician team. The APP may perform any or all of the following: histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; make diagnoses; treat injuries or illnesses; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patients and/or prescribe medications; and perform invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The Advanced Practice Provider works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost‑effective, and quality patient care. The Advanced Practice Provider will provide patient care under a defined departmental and state‑approved scope of practice with the collaboration of an Attending Physician(s). Essential Job Statements Performance Expectation: Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population served. Demonstrates expert knowledge to coordinate patient care across the continuum of services through the patient's trajectory of illness. Assesses the health status of individuals through health histories, physical examinations, screenings, and ordering or performing diagnostic tests. Provides direct patient care, assists with surgical procedures, therapeutic interventions, prescribes medications, and counsels patients to a specified patient population. Initiates emergency procedures as needed. Practices safety, environmental and infection control methods. Makes rounds with attending physicians as necessary. Supervises and/or coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the assigned area. Documents all pertinent information in the patient's medical record. Interprets information obtained from history, physical, and diagnostic tests to develop treatment plans. Forms and prioritizes appropriate short‑term and long‑term therapeutic plans. Incorporates physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects of patients and families into the plan of care to promote optimal health. Explores strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption within the specialty area. Establishes priorities to meet patient and family health needs. Maintains effective communication with all members of the health care team to assure coordinated care. Assists with coordination of care between primary and specialty health care services when needed. Performance Expectation: Consultation Functions as a consultant to other health care professionals in the multidisciplinary team regarding routine and unusual therapeutic interventions. Serves as a liaison, translator, and negotiator for staff, patients, and families. Collaborates in the development, implementation, communication, and monitoring of the multidisciplinary plan of care for complex patients. Shares responsibility for patient education, which may include patients, family members, or other caregivers. May provide training to residents, fellows, and other health care staff in the area of specialty. Participates in continual assessment and revision of practices and procedures in the specialty area. Promotes teamwork through effective communication and feedback to team members. Recognizes the team as integral to individual effectiveness and quality patient outcomes. Performance Expectation: Research Utilizes current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care for identified patient populations. Contributes to the profession through participation in research, publications, consultations, and educational activities. Demonstrates knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area. Performance Expectation: Ethical Decision Making Skills Incorporates clinical judgment in ethical decision making. Practices ethical principles in patient decisions. Promotes interdisciplinary collaborative processes to resolve ethical dilemmas. Demonstrates negotiation, mediation, collaboration, compromise, and accommodation skills to assist families struggling with ethical decisions. Examines patient values that impact treatment decisions. Recognizes patient rights as a foundation for ethical decisions. Performance Expectation: Professional Development Seeks opportunities for professional growth through organizational affiliations. Functions in collaborative relationships with physicians, allied health professionals, and administration. Assesses personal learning needs and implements a growth plan. Enhances professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, in‑service activities, and workshops. Participates in teaching programs as needed. Engages in continuing education to maintain competencies and meet re‑certification requirements. Maintains certification to continue VCUHS privileges. Performance Expectation: Miscellaneous Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCU Health. Provides assistance to team members. Accepts alternate assignments as required, graciously. Patient Population Age‑specific groups served: appropriate to unit assignment. Employment Qualifications Required Education Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program. Preferred Education Service‑specific education. Licensure/Certification Required Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant. Current national certification appropriate for the role. Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by‑laws for specific job titles. Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications. Additional certifications may include Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as determined by the department. Licensure/Certification Preferred Service‑specific certification. Minimum Qualifications Years and type of required experience: previous clinical experience with the population served.
