Purpose of Position

The Director, Community Impact, Healthy Community leads, launches, and oversees the investments, initiatives, strategies, goals, and outcomes, as part of the Plan for Community Well Being outlined in the Reducing Health Disparities Mobilization Plan. Through collective impact, by connecting, convening and aligning local available programs, and resources the Director, Community Impact, Healthy Community creates outcomes and results through community engagement, resource development and utilization, volunteer engagement, agency relations, donor relations and public relations.

Key Responsibilities

55% Lead Healthy Community Stakeholder Engagement through Collective Impact:

• Represent United Way and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders in Healthy Community: United Way partner agencies, donors, funders, area school districts, and other key community stake holders.
• As a leader in Healthy Community issues related to the community level goals of United Way of Dane County. Acquire and maintain up to date knowledge on community systems, relationships, data and best practices related to our strategies within the Healthy Community portfolio.
• Connect or provide partner agencies with technical assistance and support to advance our common vision and goals.
• Develop, convene and implement partnership initiatives or specific strategies to meet community level goals in Healthy Community.
• Represent United Way and the Plan for Community Well Being on relevant community task forces, commissions, and committees, including the health council staff team and support the CEO in their role on the health council, as well as United Way’s contributions to the health council’s priority collaborations (Saving Our Babies and Connect Rx in 2025).
• Coordinate activities and communication with partner organizations, i.e., state, county, local commissions, networks, councils, etc. as they relate to the Healthy Community programs and strategies of the Plan for Community Well Being, or Vision Council goals and strategies.
• Lead, facilitate and convene community engagement and listening sessions to educate the community, provide feedback on our vision, goals, and strategies, and motivate public action and advocacy. This includes facilitating convenings to bring community together to address priority issues and systemic responses aligned to United Way’s Plan for Community Well Being and Strategic Plan.
• Support, develop and manage implementation of pilot programming and special projects as requested.
• In collaboration with Marketing, lead marketing and public relations for Health Impact Area and external communications about the portfolio of work. Including being the United Way Representative for website, digital content including videos, media interviews, event or press conference speaking engagements, communication content with donors, meetings, and fundraising campaigns.
• Create all content for published reports on progress and results.

15 % Volunteer Management and Leadership: United Way’s work is done through volunteers on leadership teams that drive results and maximize the strategies, goals and to ensure accountability.

• Recruit, staff and support the Healthy Community Solutions Team, and all other volunteer Leadership Teams working on Healthy Community.
• Facilitate Health Community Solutions Team Meetings. This includes creating agendas, content, facilitating, presentations, taking notes and creating and managing the workplan for the team throughout the year.
• Recruit volunteers to the Committee and use best practices for relationship and volunteer management to lead the volunteer team.
• Manage planning and implementation of the strategies and investments related to the Healthy Community portfolio.

10 % Impact Investment Process and Grant and Investment Management and Reporting :

• With the Community Solution Team (CST volunteer committee), manage the community impact investment (grant) process for Healthy Community. This includes, application, contract management and reporting procedures for funded nonprofit agency partners.
• Assist the Vice President, Community Impact in providing oversight of all United Way financial and human investments made through the CST and Vision Council investment processes related to Healthy Community.
• Primary responsibility for United Way investments in Healthy Community, ensuring dollars are utilized by agencies per application and agency agreement guidelines.
• Review proposals, annual reports, financial reports, and other materials from nonprofit partner agencies to ensure program implementation and fidelity to outcomes as stated in the grant applications. Resolve issues when they arise.
• Work with Strategic Collaborations and the Resource Development Department on all outside grant contract reporting obligations to ensure timely and accurate submission of required reports and results to ensure sustainable and renewable funding for United Way and partner agencies.

10 % Research, Data Analysis, and Data Indicators :

• Collect, analyze and summarize community and program level data from a variety of validated sources to create performance measurements to track trends and impacts of United Way Investments in Plan for Community Well Being Goals.
• Create the impact content for written reports for reporting to volunteer committees and Board and external stakeholders to drive results and maximize strategies.
• Analyze data and produce and present written presentations for the Board, and other volunteer leadership for decision making, strategic direction and program improvement.

10 % Support of Overall Organization

• Meet with donors or present at Resource Development meetings as the lead for Healthy Community at United Way to encourage fundraising and community investment.
• Participate in organizational planning, strategy and program development, and activities of the organization as appropriate or determined.
• Participation at the Director Level includes representing Community Impact and Healthy Community at all meetings, being present for meetings, contributing to content, discussion and engaging with other staff members.
• Activities including staff meetings, departmental meetings, Board meetings, Vision Council meetings, and other staff/volunteer events.
• Actively participate in at least one United Way internal committee.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in health, social work or related disciplines required.
• Knowledge of the community and local health systems.
• Knowledge of the non-profit organization community in Dane County.
• Highly effective written and oral communication skills.
• Strong strategic thinking, interpersonal and analytical skills.
• Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Demonstrated leadership ability, facilitation skills, strategic thinking and accountability to create measurable results.
• Ability to work in and create direct relationships with top level community, corporate and United Way leadership.
• Ability to develop strong sense of organization’s brand and use in making strategic decisions.
• Team orientation with a demonstrated ability to organize and motivate teams involving staff, external resources, and volunteers at all levels.
• Self-motivated and strong track record of getting results.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Experience

• At least three years of progressively responsible leadership experience in the field of health, social services provision, non-profit service delivery, management, or related field.
• Minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
• Experience building partnerships with diverse stakeholders connecting and aligning strategies and resources, fostering innovation using shared data, measurement, and accountability.
• Volunteer management experience.
• Experience conducting needs assessments.
• Knowledge of social service systems, programs, and grants management.
• Experience designing programs in partnership with analytics, talent, culture and/or learning and development.
• Ability to build and manage productive relationships through an open, friendly, and inclusive environment.
• Able to successfully facilitate/lead a diverse group(s) of people, build consensus and facilitate collaboration toward a common vision.
• Able to meet deadlines and be flexible.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, high level of organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office computer systems including Microsoft 365, PowerPoint, word processing and spreadsheets, and the ability to learn client data management platforms.

Work Schedule, Location, and Travel Requirements

• Full-time, salaried position (40 hours/week); FLSA Exempt.
• Core hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., with flexibility required for early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays based on organizational needs.
• Possibility for limited hybrid work subject to policy.
• Local travel within Dane County is required for meetings, events, and community engagements; reliable transportation is necessary.

Salary Range

$58,200- 63,200 (based on experience). In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, vision, dental, life and disability insurance. United Way contributes 8% of gross wages to a defined contribution plan, which becomes fully vested after 5 years of employment. Employees also have the option to contribute to a 403(b) plan. Furthermore, we provide generous paid time off, including vacation, sick and personal days, as well as 10 paid holidays each year.
