Under minimum supervision, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots building Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment in order to provide a comfortable and safe environment in all University facilities including: classrooms, laboratories, offices, student residences, and refrigerators and freezers in accordance with applicable standards of the trade and regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs, as required, building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer's guidelines, operating design parameters, and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
• Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
• Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized electronic, pneumatic, and direct digital control (DDC) devices related to HVACR control.
• Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, on oil and gas equipment, on refrigerators / freezers and ice makers, and on other refrigeration equipment.
• Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters and instruments.
• Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants.
• Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, pipefitting, welding and fabrication as required.
• Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required
• Coordinates repairs with other trades affected by HVAC operations.
• Assists in furniture and event set ups and breakdowns, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department's responsibilities and the individual's capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• HS diploma or equivalent and current documentation indicating current successful completion of formal training classes or programs and be able to exhibit acceptable life experiences in HVACR work
• Possess EPA Universal/R410A license.
• A minimum of ten years of service in the trade.
• Possess and maintain personal hand tools required for the trade. Must be able to use a multimeter.
• Must have the ability to research information, from various sources, to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment i.e. campus technical manuals, as built prints, equipment supply distributors, and internet websites, etc.
• Must have the ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants adhering to HVAC/R industry standards, specifications, and protocols.
• Ability to record all refrigerant loss/charge amounts and manufacturer information into current CMMS system when servicing campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance on all campus HVAC/R equipment using the current work order system, visual inspection, verbal or written instruction etc.
• Must have the ability to properly lubricate, repair, replace, and align both direct and indirect mechanical drive components, for all campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Must have the ability to lubricate, repair, replace, rebuild, and align all pumps serving campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Must have the ability to verify and diagnose proper operation of chilled/heating water hydronic generation equipment such as Centrifugal, Screw, Scroll, and Reciprocating Chillers, Gas and Oil-fired boilers.
• Capable of troubleshooting equipment control panels both locally and through interfaced communication, with building automation systems.
• Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all central heating/cooling air distribution systems.
• Ability to verify, troubleshoot, isolate, repair or replace all associated components of the campus chilled/heating hydronic water distribution systems.
• Ability to verify steam pressure is available to all campus heat exchangers, where applicable.
• Must have the ability to install, secure, repair or replace all associated components of the campus air distribution systems, to optimize airflow and structural stability.
• Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all Electric heat sources throughout the campus i.e. reheat, air handler, auxiliary, and baseboard heating coils.
• Must have the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, isolate, repair or replace all associated components of direct expansion/refrigeration systems, supporting a wide variety of applications throughout the campus.
• Must have the ability to implement several pipefitting techniques to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment i.e. pipe threading, brazing, lead and silver soldering. Where applicable, must recover, pressurize,
• Must have the ability to verify, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair or replace all control system components from source through end devices.
• Proficient at a variety of applications implemented throughout the campus such as: direct digital control, pneumatic, electro-pneumatic, electronic, electric, and electro-mechanical controls.
• Must have the ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; the ability to interact with students, faculty, administration, and staff in a professional and positive manner, as well as the ability to read and understand OSHA guidelines such as Safety Data Sheets, equipment safety data plates, fuel/chemical flash points, etc.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and sequence of operations to diagnose proper operation of campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Physical ability to climb ladders, to bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; the ability to work in enclosed spaces.
• Valid Driver's License required with a good driving record and no traffic violations. Must be able to meet and maintain VU driving privileges as outlined by Villanova's Risk Management's Motor Vehicle Record Policy for Driver's of University Vehicles.
• Ability to erect and work on scaffolding as per OSHA standards.
• Excellent safety record.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Current OSHA 10 certification or higher and ability to operate aerial/scissor lift, bucket truck and fork lift.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

• Must have the physical ability to climb ladders, to bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; the ability to work in enclosed spaces.
• Core hours are M-F 7:30am until 4:00pm. Coming in earlier or staying later would be expected if emergency repairs are required.

Applicants must take a timed (1.5hrs) 135 question pre-qualification exam. All needed formulas for the exam questions will be given with exam. Following the exam, a verbal panel style interview will be conducted lasting approximately 1 hour.
