Anticipated Athletic Director / ESP

Overview CPS seeks an Athletic Director to oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive high‑school athletics program. The role reports to the Executive Director of CPS Sports Administration and the Building Principal. The incumbent will support CPS’s mission to provide world‑class learning experiences for 330,000+ students. Responsibilities Administer the extracurricular athletic programs and ensure compliance with CPS policies, state regulations, and good practice. Supervise licensed and non‑licensed staff, including Assistant Athletic Directors, coaches, trainers, and support personnel. Maintain required files and records such as player cards, Aspen‑eligibility, physicals, transfer paperwork, transportation requests, and coaching certifications. Respond to information requests from OSA, IHSA, FOIA, Title IX, the Law Department, recruiting colleges, and press releases. Implement board policies and advise the administration on regulatory matters related to athletics. Assess department needs through consultation with students, staff, and parents regarding equipment, budgeting, transportation, venue upgrades, and technology. Evaluate extracurricular athletic programs and engage in long‑term planning, including adding or dropping programs, addressing Title IX requirements, and hiring additional coaches or trainers. Develop and update handbooks, brochures, and policy manuals. Inform the school community about athletic programs through websites, emails, media, and social media. Stay current on research, issues, and regulations related to academic, racial, gender, and socio‑economic equity in sport. Develop a grade‑check system and maintain that all eligibility reports and participation lists are submitted weekly. Develop and update team schedules on all school platforms for public viewing. Oversee transportation for all team travel and ensure each athlete’s eligibility for participation in each contest. Develop a school safety plan for every home venue and oversee all safety activities. Manage academic performance of student‑athletes, including the Individual Study Plan process for at‑risk athletes and the development of study halls, advising, and postsecondary guidance. Direct and coordinate fiscal operations, including short‑ and long‑term fiscal planning, budgeting assistance, purchasing coordination, capital improvement recommendations, contract negotiations, specification formulation, and procurement of supplies. Supervise ticket sales, fundraising events, receipt and disbursement of student activity funds, and payment of coaching staff. Oversee planning and execution of all parent volunteer organizations, ticket takers, announcers, clock operators, officials, athletic trainers, and lifeguards. Coordinate transportation and scheduling logistics for all athletic contests and visiting teams’ needs. Provide emergency health care and first‑aid treatment during competitions. Arrange field, gymnasium, and aquatics practice schedules, including arrangements for summer programs and non‑school use of playing fields. Manage contracts for every athletic contest and coordinate with CPS for stadium usage and with the Chicago Park District for IGAs. Recruit, screen, interview, and recommend prospective coaches and staff; monitor and evaluate coach and staff performance; develop coaching evaluation systems; and support professional development and career advancement. Monitor staff time, attendance, and conduct performance reviews; investigate complaints regarding employee conduct or performance; and encourage the development and implementation of new strategies and philosophies. Coordinate the development, implementation, and review of the extracurricular athletic program and attend practices and games for evaluation and needs assessment. Attend professional conferences to stay up‑to‑date with instructional practices and enforce state and city board policies on equal educational opportunity. Develop an effective, comprehensive, and equal‑opportunity athletic program for all male and female students and advise on program modifications to meet individual student needs. Manage and develop facilities: inspect buildings, grounds, machines, and equipment; issue repair orders; provide specifications for maintenance; enforce occupational health and safety codes; oversee swimming pool maintenance; recommend watering schedules; and order repairs or replacements of defective parts. Supervise departmental activities related to public and special events, part‑time student help, and the implementation of the insurance program covering school athletes. Complete incident reports for minor and traumatic injuries, resolve conflicts, and anticipate potential problems. Organize and coordinate departmental awards, alumni recognition, and community engagement activities. Establish a positive image for the department within the school and community through public relations efforts. Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education. NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator. Minimum three (3) years of experience in sports program administration and/or interscholastic sports; supervisory experience preferred. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Ability to coordinate and manage all aspects of the athletic program, including financials. Ability to motivate student athletes and coaches and to make rational decisions under stressful conditions. Proficiency in technology and applications, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and web content editing software. Other Requirements The role requires a non‑traditional schedule that may include evening and weekend hours. Transportation requirements and access to reliable transportation may also be necessary. Conditions of Employment Employees must establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire and throughout employment.
