SBA Business Development Officer

The SBA Business Development Officer (BDO) is an expert on SBA 7(a) lending and is responsible for developing and maintaining external referral partnerships that generate SBA loan opportunities. This role is fully focused on externally sourced SBA 7(a) loan origination and serves as Truliant’s primary market-facing representative for its SBA program. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Develop, maintain, and expand a network of external referral sources (business brokers, CPAs, attorneys, commercial real estate brokers, franchise consultants, bankers, and other professional partners) to generate SBA 7(a) loan opportunities. Source 100% of loan production externally; rely on no inbound leads, branch referrals, or portfolio-based sourcing. Act as Truliant’s market-facing SBA subject‑matter expert, representing the credit union in meetings, events, and industry forums. Conduct initial deal screening, SBA eligibility assessment, and transaction structuring in accordance with SBA SOP and internal credit policy. Work directly with the Director of SBA Credit early in the process to prescreen opportunities and align on structure, risk, and feasibility. Prepare and deliver a BDO workbook, including high‑level cash flow analysis, transaction narrative, and key risk considerations. Coordinate with internal partners (SBA underwriters, loan coordinators, and closers) to ensure efficient execution from packaging through closing. Deliver commitment letters and explain approved terms, conditions, and timelines to borrowers. Assist the portfolio management team in communicating with borrowers who are past due on loan payments. Uphold Truliant’s reputation for professionalism, responsiveness, and execution excellence within the SBA marketplace. Participate in community and industry activities as a representative of Truliant Credit Union’s SBA program. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support the SBA Lending division. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge and understanding of SBA SOP, credit, and the SBA 7(a) process. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills. Proficient PC skills, with intermediate knowledge of MS Excel and Word. Ability to collaborate with SBA teammates and understand all business processes within the SBA loan lifecycle. Detail‑oriented with excellent time management and organizational skills. Capability to work independently in a virtual office environment. Flexibility to pivot when markets shift and ability to operate with minimal supervision. Commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant’s members. Physical Requirements Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping. Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer. Ability to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds. Education and Background Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Business, Finance, or a related field. 2–5+ years of experience in SBA lending. Annual SBA 7(a) production of $15million or greater.
