General Accountant

Role Description The General Accountant is a full-time, on-site role based in the Charleston, South Carolina Metropolitan Area. This role is responsible for performing day-to-day accounting functions, including preparing and recording journal entries, reconciling bank and general ledger accounts, and ensuring accuracy in financial records. The General Accountant assists with month-end and year-end closing activities, supports the preparation of financial statements and reports, and helps maintain compliance with internal controls, policies, and relevant regulations. Daily tasks also include processing accounts payable and receivable transactions, monitoring budgets, investigating variances, and providing financial data and analysis to management. The individual in this role collaborates with cross-functional teams, responds to accounting inquiries, and contributes to continuous improvement of financial processes that support Palmetto Goodwill’s mission.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated proficiency in core accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, budgeting, and variance analysis in a nonprofit or multi-location environment is preferred.
• Strong skills in using accounting software and ERP systems, along with Microsoft Excel skills.
• Ability to interpret financial data, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and organizational policies.
• Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate respectfully and professionally across diverse teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; relevant professional certifications are a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel required; experience with Sage Intacct and ADP Workforce Now is preferred.
