La Carte Manager - Opportunities in Boston (Fenway area) and Quincy Shaw’s and Star Market is working to become the favorite food and drug retailer in every state it operates and is a proud member of the Albertson’s family of stores. Shaw’s is one of the oldest continuously operated supermarkets in the United States with its roots dating to 1860. Throughout five New England states, there are 155 store locations employing approximately 18,000 associates. The LaCarte Manager is responsible for the direct supervision of the LaCarte Department operations, providing customer service and ensuring that associates follow company policies and procedures. This includes being friendly, responsive, knowledgeable and passionate, while achieving production and budget objectives. The role also involves stocking duties as needed and serving as the role model for customer service standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Manage and be accountable for all aspects of the department operation and supervision, including personnel, customer service, sales, gross profit, labor, shrink and inventory goals, product ordering, quality, presentation, merchandising, organization, pricing, stocking, shelf allocation, staffing, training, turnover and morale. Assist in increasing sales by utilizing the five steps of retail selling – connect with the customer; qualify the customer; present solutions; close the sale; create a customer for life. Ensure adherence to all Company and Department specific policies and procedures on a regular basis. Perform job functions of other Department personnel in their absence or in addition to theirs. Act as store manager in the absence of the Store Director, Assistant Store Director and Evening/Relief Manager. Effectively supervise 2 to 15 associates in a fast paced, multi‑functional environment and take appropriate disciplinary action when necessary. Operate various store computer systems. Work 40 hours per week during peak business times.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Conduct periodic reviews of work practices and provide information to Store Management. Achieve objectives such as food safety, workplace safety and company audits. Perform other duties as assigned by Store Management.

ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW, AND APPROVAL OF WORK

Assign, review, and approve work of all clerks under direct supervision. Anticipate and ensure timely completion of necessary work. Determine staffing levels for each shift based on business needs. Prepare weekly work schedules.

RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY

Recommend staffing, interview and hire department personnel, and promote associates. Assign work, direct, train Department personnel. Complete performance appraisals for all Department personnel. Impose discipline and recommend termination. Schedule work hours and time off for Department personnel. Authorize and assign overtime. Accept valid excuses for absences, tardiness or early leaving. Supervise the entire department and achieve goals set by the Store Director. Know, understand and support department specific policies and procedures. Ensure associates perform work safely and ergonomically. Take action on unsafe working conditions when appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE AND BACKGROUND REQUIRED

At least 18 years old. Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment. Problem‑solving ability. Experience as an Assistant Department Manager or equivalent. On‑the‑job training provided. Leadership qualities: good listening, motivation, respect for others, and pleasant communication with customers, vendors, Store Management and other personnel. Thorough understanding of Company and Department policies and procedures. Good judgment and the ability to make sound decisions and solve problems arising during the course of the work. Ability to understand customer needs and ask clarifying questions. High school diploma or better.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Stores open 7 days a week. Department Managers usually work 40 hours a week. Retail store conditions are generally dry with moderate temperature. Freezer conditions are very cold; cooler conditions are cold. Repetitive tasks required. Exterior conditions vary by season and may be wet, dry, warm or cold. A hair restraint must be worn at all times. Associates in the LaCarte Department are scheduled according to peak customer times.

GENERAL

Full‑time, supervisory position subject to transfer to other locations. Food safety awareness required.
