Job Title: Electrical EngineerThe current vacancy is in the Engineering Department and will be filled at either the Electrical Engineer I or Electrical Engineer II level. This recruitment will also be used to establish a Citywide list which may be used to fill possible future vacancies in other departments. First review of all applications will be Monday, September 21, 2026, and then weekly thereafter as needed.Electrical Engineer I ($69,685.41 - $97,620.22 Annually) An Electrical Engineer I performs technical electrical engineering tasks which supports the development of capital improvement projects and the operation and maintenance of the City's electric utility. The Electrical Engineer I is the entry-level classification within the professional electrical engineering series. Assignments in Engineering and Energy Resources provide opportunities for the application of independent judgment and initiative in planning, operation, maintenance, design, and project management. Under general direction, an Electrical Engineer I performs basic calculations used to size transformers; calculate electrical loads; determine conductor sizes; fuse sizes; determine proper voltage configurations; calculate voltage losses for various conductor sizes, types, and lengths; determine proper sizing and placement of distribution poles, equipment, and facilities; and perform drafting and design work utilizing GIS (Geographic Information Systems), Bluebeam, and AutoCad to produce drawings for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground, primary and secondary distribution circuits and facilities for the electric system. This class may also create construction documents per the National Electrical Code (NEC) related to UPS systems, DC systems, generators, motors, specialized equipment, streetlights, traffic signals, well sites, water treatment/reclamation plants, City owned buildings, parks, life-safety systems, photometrics, or other assets that the City owns or is responsible for. This may range from 12VDC to 12.47kVAC systems. This may involve specifications creating/editing, calculations, shop drawing reviews, National Electrical Code reviews and conformance analysis, testing, and other incidental design related requirements to ensure that the system is designed per City standards/requirements, and meets all client related objectives. Assignments in Engineering and Energy Resources provide opportunities for the application of independent judgment and initiative in planning, operation, maintenance, design, and project management. This class performs related duties as required. The Electrical Engineer I class differs from the Electrical Engineer II by the latter having significant experience and registration as an Engineer-In-Training in a state that is acceptable to the State of Arizona, enabling performance of more advanced and varied professional engineering work assignments with limited direct supervision. In addition, an Electrical Engineer I may supervise, direct, and review the work performed by lower-level engineers and technicians. Employees in this class may progress by non-competitive promotion (criteria based promotion) to Electrical Engineer II upon meeting the criteria-based requirements, in addition to any department assignment expectations and approval of the department director. This class is FLSA exempt-professional.Engineering Assignment: The Engineering assignment is responsible for managing CIP standard projects under general supervision. This position is responsible for basic design and project management for the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) throughout the entire life of projects (pre-design, design, construction contract award, construction, and warranty). Duties as an Electrical Engineer I are comprehensive, including responsibility for preparing design and bid documents, securing necessary permits and approvals, preparing cost estimates, tracking budgets, coordinating with other City departments, performing quality control and assurance, coordinating project reviews by other City departments and outside agencies, communicating with the general public and elected officials, preparing reports and calculations, overseeing the bidding and Council award processes, reviewing construction submittals, verifying conformance to the construction documents, verifying quantities, reviewing pay applications, and negotiating change orders. Work is performed under the general supervision of an Electrical Engineer II or Senior Electrical Engineer who reviews work through conferences, reports, inspections, and results achieved.Energy Resources Assignment: The Energy Resources assignment directly supports the operation and function of the City of Mesa Electric Utility and combines operational experience with professional engineering responsibilities associated with system planning, solar program administration and reviews, residential and commercial design, customer rate and load analysis, SCADA, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Outage Management System (OMS), reporting, and electric system modeling. The Electrical Engineer I performs basic engineering studies and technical work related to the planning, design, operation, and improvement of the City's electric distribution system, including analysis of electrical loads and system performance. This classification prepares calculations, reports, cost estimates, budgetary information, and technical documents under the direct supervision and technical review of a Professional Engineer or other qualified department role. This classification may assist in identifying electric system improvement priorities; supporting short- and long-term system planning; manage assigned projects; and developing, reviewing, and updating material specifications, technical documents, and public bidding documents.Electrical Engineer II ($88,949.33 - $124,603.65 Annually) An Electrical Engineer II performs technical electrical engineering tasks which supports the development of capital improvement projects and the operation and maintenance of the City's electric utility. The Electrical Engineer II is the mid-level classification within the professional electrical engineering series. Under general direction an Electrical Engineer II performs advanced calculations used to size transformers; calculate electrical loads; determine conductor sizes and fuse sizes; determine proper voltage configurations; calculate voltage losses for various conductor sizes, types, and lengths; determine proper sizing and placement of distribution poles, equipment, and facilities; and perform drafting and design work utilizing GIS (Geographic Information Systems), Bluebeam, and AutoCad to produce drawings for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground, primary and secondary distribution circuits and facilities for the electric system. In addition, an Electrical Engineer II may supervise and mentor and direct and review the work performed by lower-level engineers and technicians. Employees in this class may progress by non-competitive promotion (criteria based promotion) to Senior Electrical Engineer upon meeting the criteria-based requirements, in addition to any department assignment expectations and approval of the department director.
