General Summary & Scope The General Manager (GM) is responsible for leading Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values within a retail store, developing a high‑performing team and consistently delivering top‑line sales growth. The GM leads managers, manages all aspects of a single store, including the salon, and focuses on performance, people, and process. Principal Duties & Responsibilities Performance Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed Ulta Beauty’s goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni‑channel, and retail shrink. Drive company profitability through operational excellence, top‑line sales growth, and expense control. Leverage store forecast and payroll budgets to support scheduling needs to maximize productivity. Address issues identified by financial and operational reporting, store visits, and audit results to achieve company goals. Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations with guests to drive sales and guest service experience. Stay informed regarding new industry trends, products, and services; be knowledgeable about ingredients and benefits. Maintain prompt, regular attendance as the GM and enforce the Ulta Beauty attendance policy. People Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent; address staffing needs and open positions. Address policy violations with appropriate corrective action up to and including separation of employment in accordance with Ulta Beauty policies. Build a highly engaged team that embodies the Ulta Beauty brand through collaboration, open communication, and priority setting. Create an inclusive environment that inspires growth and engagement of associates. Lead manager and associate development, including training, competency‑based feedback, coaching, performance reviews, succession planning, and individual development plans. Participate in ongoing training, including brand and category education. Ensure direct reports participate in ongoing training. Model open communication by sharing enterprise strategy and setting goals aligned with Ulta Beauty goals. Promote teamwork by working with the management team, establishing priorities, and providing clear direction. Execute the Guest Engagement Leader program flawlessly to drive business results. Process Ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards. Adhere to and enforce the dress code. Use scheduling and task management tools to schedule associates and prioritize store workload. Protect company assets and minimize loss by meeting all store standards and operating procedures, including safety, inventory control, cash management, and loss prevention. Execute day‑to‑day inventory control processes and complete theft reporting. Support continuous improvement through adoption of initiatives and technology. Utilize company programs, tools, and resources to drive store improvements. Communicate with and provide feedback to field leadership on business trends, operational challenges, and opportunities. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Experience 3–5+ years of fast‑paced retail management or other relevant work experience. Financial management: success with driving top‑line sales, interpreting reporting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expense. Retail management: proven ability with monitoring inventory levels, achieving operational excellence, driving a service culture, and executing merchandising directives. Leadership management: experience attracting, developing, motivating top talent, adapting to change, and leading others through change. Skills Proficient with basic technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices). Excellent written and verbal communication. Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills; can manage multiple tasks. Ability to react under pressure, use good judgment in ambiguous situations, and be flexible/adaptable. Special Position Requirements Work a flexible, full‑time schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be available to close the store at least once per week. Attend corporate business meetings, conferences, and interstate travel, including overnight stays. Maintain valid identification for airline travel. Working Conditions Frequent use of a computer, telephonic devices, and related office supplies. Continuous mobility throughout the store during shift. Frequent bending, pushing, reaching, and twisting. Frequent lifting, carrying and/or moving up to 25 lbs. Continuous walking, coordination and manipulation of objects.
