District Safety Coordinator

Reports To: Executive Director of Safety & Emergency Management


FLSA Status: Exempt

General Definition of Work


The District Safety Coordinator supports the development, implementation, coordination, and continuous improvement of districtwide safety, security, emergency preparedness, and crisis response programs.

The District Safety Coordinator serves as a key liaison between schools, district departments, law enforcement, fire/EMS, emergency management agencies, and other community partners. The coordinator provides direct support to school administrators in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and critical incidents.

This position requires a highly visible and collaborative leader who can translate district safety expectations into effective school level practices. The District Safety Coordinator assists with emergency planning, safety training, drills and exercises, incident management, safety assessments, regulatory compliance, and after-action improvement while promoting a districtwide culture of preparedness and shared responsibility for safety.

Essential Functions

Emergency Preparedness & Planning

  • Assist in the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of district and school emergency operations plans, safety plans, procedures, protocols, and related documentation.
  • Work directly with school administrators to ensure emergency plans are current, practical, and aligned with district expectations and applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Support district implementation of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), Incident Command System (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS), and other recognized emergency management practices.
  • Assist schools and district departments with planning for emergencies including severe weather, fire, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, utility failures, threats, acts of violence, reunification operations, and other critical incidents.
  • Help maintain district emergency response resources, plans, checklists, contact information, and operational procedures.
Drills, Exercises & Training
  • Coordinate, observe, document, and evaluate school emergency drills and exercises.
  • Provide technical assistance to administrators before, during, and following safety drills.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of safety and emergency preparedness training for administrators, teachers, support staff, substitutes, and other district personnel.
  • Support tabletop exercises, functional exercises, and other preparedness activities involving schools, district departments, and community response partners.
  • Identify trends and areas for improvement based on drill observations, exercises, incidents, and school feedback.
  • Develop and maintain training materials, quick reference guides, presentations, and other resources to improve employee preparedness.
Incident Response & Crisis Coordination
  • Support the Executive Director of Safety & Emergency Management during emergencies, critical incidents, and crisis situations.
  • Respond to schools and district facilities as directed to assist administrators and emergency responders with incident coordination.
  • Assist with establishing and supporting Incident Command System functions during district emergencies.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between school administrators, district leadership, law enforcement, fire/EMS, emergency management, and other response agencies.
  • Assist and monitor district incident documentation and the use of the district's incident management system.
  • Participate in after action reviews following significant incidents, exercises, and emergency responses.
  • Be available outside normal working hours when necessary for significant district emergencies or critical incidents.
School Safety Support
  • Serve as a resource for principals and school administrators regarding safety, security, and emergency preparedness concerns.
  • Conduct regular school visits to evaluate preparedness, identify concerns, provide technical assistance, and strengthen relationships with school leadership.
  • Assist with school safety assessments, site reviews, walkthroughs, and identification of potential vulnerabilities.
  • Assist administrators with planning for major school events, athletic events, graduations, community events, and other activities.
Documentation, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain accurate records related to emergency drills, exercises, safety assessments, incidents, training activities, corrective actions, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Assist with monitoring school compliance with district safety procedures and applicable statutory or regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, data, and recommendations for the Executive Director of Safety & Emergency Management.
  • Analyze safety-related information to identify recurring concerns, patterns, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive safety, security, student, personnel, investigative, and emergency planning information.
  • Assist with periodic reviews of district safety policies, administrative procedures, emergency plans, and operational guidelines.
  • Perform other duties related to safety and emergency management as assigned by the Executive Director of Safety & Emergency Management.

The successful candidate should demonstrate:
  • Thorough knowledge of school safety, emergency management, crisis response, and emergency preparedness principles.
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS), and multi-agency emergency response operations.
  • Understanding of the unique operational, legal, developmental, and organizational considerations associated with K-12 school environments.
  • Ability to remain calm, organized, and effective during emergencies and high stress situations.
  • Strong situational awareness and sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to evaluate complex situations, identify potential risks, and recommend reasonable solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish credibility with school administrators, employees, first responders, students, families, and community partners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and organizations without relying solely upon positional authority.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective adult professional development and safety training.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, exercises, debriefings, and after-action discussions.
  • Strong organizational, planning, documentation, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, emergency plans, laws, regulations, and professional standards.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology, emergency communication platforms, incident management systems, and other safety-related technology.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and a proactive, prevention-oriented approach to school safety.
  • Must be able to work under limited supervision.
Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and progressively responsible professional experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in areas related to campus safety, including community safety, emergency preparedness, crime prevention, law enforcement, physical security assessment, personal protection, military operations, K-12 education.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Special Requirements
  • Receives and maintains a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
  • Frequent travel between schools and district facilities.
  • Walking throughout school campuses, athletic facilities, parking areas, and other district properties.
  • Periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Participation in drills, exercises, facility assessments, and emergency response activities.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
  • Occasional work outside normal business hours, including evenings or weekends.
  • Response to emergencies or critical incidents outside normal working hours when circumstances require.
  • Use of computers, mobile communication devices, radios, emergency management systems, and other district technology.
  • Occasionally stressful, rapidly evolving, or emotionally challenging situations associated with emergencies, threats, investigations, or crisis events.

As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
