HR Generalist

About the Organization Our client is a prominent, mission-driven non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential housing, supportive services, and community stability across San Francisco. Operating with a compassionate, open-door philosophy, they rely on a dedicated workforce of both union and non-union staff. We are seeking an approachable, compliance-focused HR professional to join their team in fostering a supportive, safe, and equitable work environment. Required Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: 3 to 5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably at the Generalist level.

• Regulatory & Union Knowledge: strong working knowledge of federal, state, and San Francisco local labor laws. Prior experience interpreting Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) or working with unionized workforces is highly preferred.

• Non-Profit Focus: Prior experience in a non-profit or community-based setting is a strong plus, along with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and organizational values.

• Systems Proficiency: Hands-on experience navigating HRIS platforms, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and standard office software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).

• Communication & Conflict Resolution: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to handle sensitive situations with diplomacy, active listening, and de-escalation skills.

• Certifications: (S)PHR or SHRM-(S)CP certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Employee Relations & Investigations: Conduct thorough, compassionate investigations on performance and behavioral concerns. Provide guidance to managers on progressive discipline, draft clear termination summaries, and ensure all adverse actions strictly adhere to company policies, union contracts, and labor regulations.

• Union & Compliance Advisory: Serve as an expert on local (San Francisco), state, and federal labor laws, as well as Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). Advise department leadership on union work rules, grievance processes, and disciplinary steps.

• Full-Cycle Recruitment & Onboarding: Manage job requisitions, source diverse candidate pipelines, coordinate interviews with hiring managers, and facilitate welcoming onboarding/offboarding experiences for assigned client groups.

• ADA & HR Administration: Facilitate interactive ADA reasonable accommodation processes, manage employee leaves of absence, and maintain flawless employee records (both hard copy and within the HRIS). Oversee compliance tracking, including I-9s, EEO-1 reporting, and policy acknowledgements.

• Open-Door Office Culture: Model integrity, warmth, and tact as a key point of contact in the HR office. Assist visiting staff with daily inquiries, employment verifications, and general HR support.
