The East Carolina University Police Department, located in the Blount House, is a professional police department providing the same level of service offered by a municipal police department, as well as other services unique to an academic institution. The department is responsible for the wellbeing of everyone at the University 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The average daily population served is approximately 40,000 including students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The department works closely with administrators, students, faculty, and staff to create and maintain a secure atmosphere. Its statutory arrest jurisdiction includes all University property as well as streets and sidewalks adjacent to the property. In addition, it participates in a mutual aid agreement with other local departments, including the City of Greenville, which gives University Officers jurisdiction in much of the city-area surrounding the University. University Officers are also assigned to local multi-jurisdiction task forces. The ECU Police Department consists of over 50 full-time sworn police officer positions and up to 10 sworn reserve officer positions that are certified by the State of North Carolina and 16 non-sworn departmental personnel. ECU Police Officers patrol university grounds on foot, in patrols cars, and on bicycles. The position is that of a uniformed patrol officer performing standard law enforcement work on the University’s campus. Officers are responsible for enforcing state and local laws and University policies as they pertain to law enforcement. Officers are empowered with full law enforcement authority and are charged with the responsibility of the apprehension of criminal offenders, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, and warrant/summons service. Officers have jurisdiction on all property that is owned, operated, or controlled by the University, as well as the streets or highways that are immediately adjacent to University property. Officers are responsible for deterring crime, maintaining the peace, protecting lives and property, proactive patrol, and responding to calls for service within the University community. This will be accomplished by such means as high visibility patrol, intervention in criminal acts in progress, and investigation of criminal violations, etc. Requirements Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with provisions of the NC Criminal Justice & Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. More information regarding the minimum standards for certification can be found here. Qualifications Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. *Trainees will be considered but must have the ability to qualify for attendance at a State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy including satisfying all relevant background check and physical agility requirements as required by the NC CJETSC and hiring agency. Note: Outside lateral hires who are already sworn law enforcement officers at time of hire may be placed in any of the relevant career progression steps for Police Officer based on prior sworn experience. However, such appointment is conditional on successful completion of the agency’s field training program. Out-of-state hires attainment of NC CJETSC certification within an agency-specified timeframe. An individual shall be eligible to apply up to three (3) years of experience as a United States military police enlisted member or officer to satisfy the experience requirements of a sworn UNC System campus LEO within the guidelines.
