Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon
$421.81kShriners Children's Chicago
Shriners Children's St. Louis
Shriners Children's St. Louis is recruiting multiple full-time Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons to support the continued growth and evolution of our orthopedic program. Current recruitment priorities include:
- One (1) General Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon
- One (1) Pediatric Spine Surgeon
- One (1) Pediatric Upper Extremity/Hand Surgeon
Each role is structured to support a predominantly subspecialty-focused practice, with approximately 80-90% of clinical time dedicated to the surgeon's primary area of expertise and 10-20% to general pediatric orthopedics, depending on subspecialty and patient demand.
The patient population and acuity are comparable to other orthopedic-focused pediatric hospitals, with case mix influenced by the absence of an onsite PICU. Surgeons practice within a collaborative care model supported by Physical and Occupational Therapy, Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services (POPS), and 3.0 FTE Advanced Practice Providers.
The standard weekly schedule is designed to balance operative volume, clinic access, and professional development. In a typical week, surgeons will have two dedicated operating room block days, two full clinic days using standardized scheduling templates, and one flex day for administrative responsibilities, program development, research, or other non-clinical activities. Operating room block time is allocated based on subspecialty needs and patient volumes.
Call is taken on a rotating basis and is home call only, with no trauma or emergent responsibilities. Outreach clinics are primarily covered by APPs, allowing surgeons to focus on clinic and operative care onsite.
All successful candidates must have completed a pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship. It is highly preferred that candidates for spine and lower extremity/limb deformity positions also have additional fellowship training in their respective subspecialty areas.
Compensation is determined by a combination of years of post-fellowship experience and departmental equity.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for pediatric patients with orthopedic conditions including limb deformities, scoliosis, fractures, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, and other musculoskeletal disorders.
- Provide surgical and non-surgical management based on current standards of care, evidence-based practices, and patient-specific considerations.
- Participate in inpatient and/or outpatient care, including preoperative and postoperative management, consultations, and discharge planning.
- Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards.
- Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists in the coordinated care of patients.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record system in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
- Participate in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma response as assigned.
- Contribute to departmental quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance processes.
- May participate in medical education, research, and scholarly activities depending on institutional affiliation or department expectations.
- Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
- Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.

- Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
- Must possess eligibility for active DEA
- Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
- Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric orthopedic surgical techniques, growth and development, and musculoskeletal conditions unique to children.
- Proficiency in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management in pediatric populations.
- Familiarity with pediatric imaging, casting, bracing, and non-operative treatment protocols.
