Job Description Facilities Specialist - (260000MU) This position is responsible for planning, assigning, and supervising the work of building maintenance technicians in the construction, alteration, repair, and preventative maintenance of buildings, floors, painting, roofs, walls, stairways, doors, windows, and other structures of the medical complex. The incumbent estimates time and materials required for jobs, supervises and orders materials, supplies, and inventories, and prepares plans and sketches. The role requires the ability to read and understand plans and specifications prepared by architects and engineers. The Facilities Specialist inspects projects upon completion for compliance with work requests and performs related duties as required. Additionally, the position assists in maintaining all policies and procedures for all relevant areas within facilities, trains staff as appropriate, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Expertise and support are provided to all engineering specialists as needed. The facilities specialist consults with standards from Joint Commission, DC Department of Health, EP A, DCRA, OSHA, Architects, Engineers, Construction Managers, Space Management, International codes and standards, and other regulatory agencies. The role responds to all hospital emergencies including leaks, odors, and fire alarms. A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate hospital vehicles are required. Physical demands include standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving up to 50 lbs. Qualifications Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED (Required) Vocational education from a trade school with extensive knowledge of electrical codes (Required) Minimum Work Experience 10 years of facility maintenance/carpentry experience or related industry experience (Required) 10 years of healthcare experience within an acute care and research hospital (Preferred) 5 years of experience in hospital engineering facility maintenance management (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge Frequently bend, stoop, sit, stand, walk, reach, carry, push, pull 40–75 pounds during shift. Required Licenses and Certifications DCRA General Contractor License (Preferred) Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) (Preferred) Functional Accountabilities Facilities Management Manage minor to medium construction projects. Inspect workmanship of building maintenance technicians and projects for quality and compliance; review and ensure compliance with critical space. Manage the Building Maintenance Program (BMP). Point of contact for all BMP upgrades and maintenance. Sign off on all project work completed for performance outcomes. Ensure the contract and work on fire wall and smoke barrier penetrations. Policies and Procedures Assist with the creation and maintenance of departmental policies and procedures. Provide expertise and support to all building maintenance technicians as needed. Ensure all staff are in compliance with regulatory requirements. Perform, review, and summarize data for monthly departmental review. Safety Ensure that a safe work environment is maintained. Perform documented safety rounds. Training and Service Provide training as needed for facility/engineering staff. Provide leadership and guidance to support staff and direct reports. Support Training Specialists competency trainings for off shifts. Safety Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation. Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation. Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication. Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers.
