Vice President of Operations

Position Summary

The Vice President of Operations is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership, and overall performance of the company's trucking and logistics operations. This position oversees operational safety, service delivery, financial performance, fleet productivity, and organizational effectiveness across all operating locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with the company's business objectives, financial goals, and growth plans.
• Provide executive leadership and oversight for operations across all terminals, facilities, and operating locations.
• Establish and maintain consistent operational procedures, performance standards, and best practices.
• Oversee organizational safety initiatives and ensure operational compliance with applicable FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
• Review safety metrics, accident trends, claims, CSA performance, and other operational data to identify risks and implement corrective actions.
• Partner with Safety, Maintenance, Human Resources, and operational leadership to reduce accidents, workplace injuries, preventable incidents, and regulatory exposure.
• Direct operational activities to support reliable and timely customer service, equipment utilization, driver productivity, and customer retention.
• Collaborate with Sales and Customer Service to evaluate customer needs, address service concerns, and ensure operational readiness for new or expanded business.
• Identify opportunities to improve fleet capacity, asset utilization, revenue per truck, empty miles, and overall operational efficiency.
• Oversee operational budgets, forecasts, expenses, and financial performance.
• Monitor and evaluate operational performance measures, including operating ratio, cost per mile, revenue per truck, fleet utilization, driver productivity, maintenance costs, and service levels.
• Implement cost-control, productivity, and process-improvement initiatives that support profitability without compromising safety or service.
• Support acquisitions, integrations, new locations, and other business expansion initiatives as assigned.
• Evaluate and implement technology, automation, reporting tools, and operational systems that improve efficiency, visibility, and decision-making.
• Recruit, lead, develop, and retain operational leadership and management personnel.
• Establish performance expectations, provide coaching and feedback, conduct performance evaluations, and address performance or conduct concerns.
• Develop succession plans and support leadership development throughout the operations organization.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration among Operations, Safety, Maintenance, Sales, Customer Service, Human Resources, Finance, and other departments.
• Remain informed of transportation industry developments, regulatory changes, operational risks, and emerging practices.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

• Bachelor's degree in business administration, logistics, transportation, operations management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation, trucking, logistics, fleet operations, or a related industry.
• At least five years of senior-level leadership experience overseeing multiple operational functions, facilities, or locations.
• Demonstrated experience managing operational budgets, financial performance, productivity measures, and cost-control initiatives.
• Working knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and other regulations applicable to trucking and logistics operations.
• Experience developing and implementing operational strategies, standardized procedures, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change, develop leaders, and manage cross-functional relationships.
• Strong business judgment, financial acumen, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to interpret operational and financial data and use findings to develop business recommendations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and operational reporting, transportation management, or fleet management systems.
• Ability to travel regularly to company facilities, customer locations, and other business sites.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work is performed in a combination of office, transportation, warehouse, maintenance, terminal, and outdoor environments.
• The employee may occasionally be exposed to noise, fumes, dust, vehicle traffic, weather conditions, and other conditions commonly associated with trucking and logistics operations.
• The position may require availability outside normal business hours to respond to operational emergencies, safety incidents, customer needs, or business disruptions.
• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, and use a computer and other office equipment.
• Frequently required to move throughout office, terminal, shop, warehouse, yard, and customer environments.
• Occasionally required to lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Must be able to travel by automobile and commercial transportation, including periodic overnight travel.
