The reporting location for this position is Monterey Sector Office in Monterey, CA. This position will work under the general supervision of State Park Superintendent III.

The State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger) serves as a first-line law enforcement and public safety supervisor for the Monterey Sector in the Monterey District. The incumbent directly supervises assigned SPPO Rangers and works closely with other District SPPO Supervisor staff to coordinate supervision, patrol staffing, law enforcement operations, emergency response, aquatic public safety, visitor services, and calls for service throughout the Monterey Sector. The incumbent works directly with Administrative Services, Facilities Development, Natural Resources, Interpretation and Education, Cultural Resources, Service Driven, campground, maintenance, and other District programs to coordinate daily operations, public access, special events, projects, resource protection, and emergency preparedness.

This is a working supervisor position responsible for preparing and adjusting schedules and patrol plans; supervising arrests, investigations, traffic collisions, searches and rescues, medical aids, aquatic emergencies, wildland fires, evacuations, major events, and other critical incidents; coordinating traffic, parking, crowd, and access management; reviewing law enforcement and administrative reports; coordinating with allied agencies; ensuring required training and qualifications; delegating and tracking training assignments; evaluating and developing employees; addressing performance and disciplinary matters; maintaining equipment and property accountability; and supporting resource protection, interpretation, special events, hiring, budgeting, and other administrative functions. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs, or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.

Working Conditions

• Work outdoors in various types of weather and in unpleasant or hazardous conditions, including around traffic, raw sewage, chemicals, wildland fire, rough terrain, and moving water.
• Work at elevated heights or near fast-moving machinery or traffic.
• Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, loud noise, and aggressive visitors.
• Work in an office environment and travel throughout the Monterey District.
• Work weekends, holidays, evenings, extended shifts, and after-hours call-outs as operationally required.
• Walk across uneven terrain in uphill and downhill conditions and stand for extended periods.
