Probation Officer I/II*

Overview The Probation Department is recruiting for Probation Officers who perform the full range of duties in handling a juvenile or adult caseload. Incumbents are peace officers responsible for investigating offenses and social history backgrounds of adult or juvenile offenders; writing reports and making recommendations to the court relative to adult and juvenile cases; supervising and counseling probationers, Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS), and mandatory supervision clients, in order to meet the conditions and goals of their probation; and conducting field investigations. Training/Advancement Probation Officer I (Trainee) are eligible for promotion to Probation Officer II upon meeting the minimum requirements for Probation Officer II and receiving a satisfactory work progress report. Conditions of Employment Peace Officer Status: These positions have peace officer status and may require the incumbent to be armed. Participation in the department\'s arming training, Field Training Officer (FTO) program, and maintenance of qualification standards is required; armed assignment may be required at the discretion of the appointing authority. Shift Work: Some positions may require working various shifts, holidays, and weekends; overtime may be required. Travel/Driver License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required; proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Eligibility and Requirements Applicants must meet peace officer requirements and education/experience requirements for one of the options below and meet both the education and experience requirements for one of the listed options as well as additional criteria including age and background checks. Detailed options include combinations of education (Bachelor’s degree, specific college coursework, Associate degree, or high school equivalency) and related experience (e.g., experience as a Probation Corrections Officer). Official documentation such as transcripts may be required. Peace Officer Requirements Successful completion of the Written Test, Physical Agility Test, and Department Interview to proceed to background investigation. Background investigation, including fingerprint check, psychological testing, and polygraph (current County employees in peace officer positions may be exempt from the polygraph). Minimum age 21 at hire (20.5 at testing); high school diploma or GED or higher; possession of a valid driver license; ability to meet vision and hearing requirements; and other standards as defined by the department and state law. Official sealed transcripts of completed college coursework may be required. Testing and Application Testing may include an in-person proctored assessment covering Written Communication, Reading Comprehension, Applying Rules, and Basic Math. Applicants may be eligible to transfer scores from related examinations within the BSCC framework.
