Automation Engineer

We are looking for a Biology Lab Automation Engineer to design and build cutting‑edge automated workflows for biology assays and processes. Biology at Science spans high‑throughput protein discovery, preclinical testing, cell engineering, and a number of other high‑impact problems. A core principle here is to deploy automation to abstract away the tedious and error‑prone parts of wet‑lab work wherever possible. You’ll work closely with scientists and engineers to make scientific progress faster, safer, and more reliable, using our large collection of advanced lab equipment to enable high‑bandwidth, low‑touch automation. This role lives on the full spectrum from prototype to production. We want someone who can stand up a rough proof of concept in a day to unblock an experiment, then know when and how to turn it into a robust, maintainable system that others can depend on. Role & Responsibilities Maintain and develop new features on our biology lab information management system, working towards making it AI‑native Help maintain and develop our open source lab automation software Work with scientists to automate validated experimental workflows on liquid handlers Design and build biology automation workcells, from quick prototypes to production‑grade systems Key Qualifications Strong software fundamentals (Python, TypeScript) Experience integrating laboratory hardware and instruments Familiarity with core molecular biology workflows (PCR, RNA/DNA extraction) A track record of both contributing independently and leading or mentoring others Ability to pick up unfamiliar domains and tools quickly as problems change Strong collaboration and communication skills Results‑oriented, action‑first outlook Preferred Qualifications Experience with mammalian cell culture automation Comfort working collaboratively in large codebases Familiarity with databases and data handling Experience with common lab orchestration software Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full‑time position is $130,000 - $175,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
