Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

Patrol all properties and adjacent areas owned and operated by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) maintaining law and order and proactively working to solve problems, support MPRB field staff, address crime/safety issues and develop positive community relationships. *Wage listed is as of 1/1/2025. Contract is currently being negotiated and hourly rate will be updated to what is bargained upon settlement of the union contract.* Candidates with prior law enforcement experience are encouraged to apply and may be eligible to start higher in the salary range. Lateral candidates may also be eligible for an abbreviated orientation training, depending on experience and qualifications. Essential Duties Proactively patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect disturbances and criminal activity and arrest violators. Responds to a wide range of calls for service including, but not limited to, crimes in progress, medical emergencies, natural disasters and rescue situations. Maintains records and prepares coherent, accurate and complete reports on all incidents encountered while on duty. Establishes probable cause for arrest. Identifies, protects, collects and preserves evidence at crime and accident scenes and protect scenes, including a preliminary investigation. Conducts surveillance of suspected criminal activities and provides undercover operations to identify and apprehend suspects as directed. Enforces traffic laws conducting traffic, marks and tags vehicles and makes written reports of accidents. Conducts follow‑up investigations for criminal prosecution on traffic and criminal complaints. Testifies in court on criminal and civil matters when necessary. Develops positive and supportive relationships with MPRB field staff for the purpose of collaboration and problem solving. Responds to residential and business alarms for intrusion, robbery or other emergencies. Protects the rights and safety of all individuals including political figures and dignitaries. Operates computer terminals to enter and retrieve essential information. Performs other duties as assigned. Related Work Understands and properly applies law enforcement principles regarding the Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure; local state and federal laws and prevailing case law. Establishes probable cause, drafts, prepares and executes search warrants and arrest warrants. Interacts with park patrons and staff and assists with community park programs. Provides general education, assistance and information to park patrons regarding proper use of parks and facilities as appropriate. Effectively communicates with all people especially individuals who are unruly, combative or emotionally disturbed. Physically controls individuals who exhibit unruly, combative or emotionally disturbed behavior.Represents the MPRB to park patrons in a caring and professional manner. Functions as a Field Training Officer (FTO) supplementing academy instruction through field experience and serving as a final step in the officer selection process; evaluates recruits and shares information with supervisors. May function as a lead worker over Park Patrol Agents providing job direction and professional advice. Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree from an accredited college or university; Bachelor's degree preferred (Applicants must submit proof of degree by September 30, 2026). Successful completion of all requirements for peace officer licensing by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board. (Applicants must submit a copy of Minnesota P.O.S.T. License or proof of passing P.O.S.T. exam by September 30, 2026). Must pass background investigation that includes meeting department standards regarding acceptable employment history, honesty, driving and conviction records. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the United States under federal requirements with no felony convictions as required by Minnesota state law. City of Minneapolis resident (preferred). Fluency in a second language (preferred). Licensing (position requirements at entry) Valid driver's license. Minnesota P.O.S.T. eligible to be licensed. United States citizen or work authorization with no felony convictions. Must be able to own/possess a firearm under federal and Minnesota law. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties. Climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Inherent to police work is exerting physical control over combative individuals. Police officers are expected to wear a prescribed uniform including duty belt and body armor. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to local travel to and from work location. Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements. Ability to remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time. Exposure to dangerous and hazardous situations and outside elements. Must have vision no worse than 20/100 in either eye without correction, correctable to 20/40 in both eyes. Must be able to distinguish the colors red, yellow and green. Must have a standard hearing average threshold without correction of any worse than a 40-decibel loss on the average at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hertz frequencies in the better ear. Must pass medical and psychological examinations which include drug and alcohol screening prior to hire. Must maintain physical fitness levels according to standards set by the Minneapolis Police Department as a term and condition of continued employment. Doctrines of community policing philosophy. Principles and techniques of criminal investigations.Interview and interrogation techniques.Customer service principles and practices. Skills and Ability to Exercise discretion and good judgment in all situations, including stressful times. Relate to and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds. Provide good written and verbal communication that is easily understood and direct in its content. Understand and follow work rules, policies and procedures related to Park Police and MPRB safety protocols. Work in a team environment and adapt to changing conditions and situations. Maintain confidentiality in work-related matters. Establish and maintain effective, respectful and productive working relationships. Maintain composure and professionalism in sometimes chaotic and stressful situations. Selection Process Applicants must submit an online application at by 4:30 pm on July 10, 2026. Applicants must also submit proof of Minnesota P.O.S.T. license or proof of passing the P.O.S.T. exam required by September 30, 2026, or applicant will be disqualified. The examination/selection process will consist of a rating of training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (15 %), education (5 %), and oral examination (80 %). Minimum passing score for each testing component and as a final overall score is 70.00. For more information on each testing component, please see below. Eligible list will expire in three (3) months. Rating of training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions: 15 % Education: 5 % Oral Examination (panel interview): 80 % Background Check, Finalist Interview and Medical Examinations: Selected candidates will then be contacted by the Minneapolis Park Police to schedule a background investigation and/or finalist interview. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation to meet department standards regarding acceptable employment history, honesty, credit, driving, and conviction records. A candidate who receives a conditional offer of employment must also be deemed medically and psychologically fit by the MPRB's health providers. Candidates must successfully pass a pre‑employment physical, including drug and alcohol screen and work performance test, and psychological examination. A candidate receiving a final job offer will receive an invitation to attend the Minneapolis Recruit Academy tentatively scheduled for October 2026.
