Course content surveys the history, cultural and political dimensions, and impact of children’s and young adult literature, including picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and young adult novels. The focus is on the importance of works by Indigenous authors and illustrators that support the growth and understanding of tribal sovereignty. Analyses of award‑winning, classic, and popular books will create awareness of the pitfalls and possibilities of children’s books and how books can shape peoples’ behaviors and decision‑making as adults, especially for those in positions to influence governmental and industry policy that impact American Indian nations and communities.
