Research Accountant

Position Title: Research AccountantDepartment: 6600|SPFACResponsibilities:Position SummaryThe Research Accountant is responsible for the financial administration, monitoring, and reporting of externally funded grants, contracts, and sponsored projects. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and private sponsor regulations while providing financial guidance and support to principal investigators, project directors, and departmental staff. The Research Accountant manages post-award accounting activities, financial reporting, budget analysis, and grant reconciliation to ensure the accurate stewardship of sponsored funds.Essential Duties and Responsibilities-Monitor and manage the financial activities of sponsored programs, grants, and contracts.-Prepare and submit financial reports, invoices, reimbursement requests, and sponsor billings in accordance with award terms and deadlines.-Perform account reconciliations and analyze budget-to-actual expenditures.-Assist principal investigators and project directors with budget management and financial planning.-Prepare, review, and process grant-related journal entries, cost transfers, and budget amendments.-Ensure compliance with federal regulations, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), agency-specific requirements, and institutional policies.-Coordinate cost-sharing documentation and indirect cost allocations as required.-Support grant closeout activities, including final financial reporting and reconciliation.-Collaborate with auditors and provide documentation for internal and external audits.-Maintain accurate financial records and grant documentation.-Provide training and guidance to departments regarding sponsored project financial management.-Identify and resolve financial discrepancies, compliance issues, and reporting concerns.-Perform other duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned to support the financial management of sponsored programs and the overall objectives of the Finance and Research Administration departments.Qualifications:Required Qualifications:Education-Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.Experience-Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in grant accounting, sponsored programs administration, higher education, healthcare, nonprofit, or government environments.-Experience managing federally funded grants and contracts preferred.-Knowledge of post-award grant administration and financial reporting requirements.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).-Knowledge of federal grant regulations, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).-Proficiency in accounting and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.-Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools.-Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.-Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.-Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.-Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.Working Conditions-Primarily office-based -Occasional extended hours may be required to meet reporting deadlines, audits, and grant closeout schedules.Job Ad# (req4502)
