The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a full-time Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse will function as an Oncology Inpatient Staff Nurse on Unit 4A – providing patient-centered oncology care through the integration of biopsychosocial principles, sound clinical judgment, and technical competence. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f), no person may serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency, accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion and graduation from the bridge program (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6). OR for graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing – possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates who meet basic education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed at the entry step on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). NOTE: Grandfathering provision – all persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series performing the duties described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. Grade determinations must meet scope – education and dimension criteria detailed in the online assessment. (Practice – Veteran/Patient Driven Care – Leadership – Professional Development and Evidence-Based Practice/Research). Grade/Level scope education examples: Nurse I – Level I: fundamental knowledge‑based care with technical competencies. Requires an Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing. Nurse I – Level II: integration of biopsychosocial concepts; cognitive skills; technically competent practice with basic or complex client care. Requires an ADN or Diploma plus 1 year of specialized nursing experience, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional experience. Nurse I – Level III: proficiency based on conscious and deliberate planning. Requires an ADN or Diploma plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, or a BSN plus 1 year of experience, or a Master’s in Nursing with no additional experience, or a Master’s in a related field with a BSN and no additional experience. Nurse II: leadership in holistic care through collaborative strategies. Requires a BSN with 2 years of experience equivalent to Nurse I – Level III, or an MSN with one year of specialized experience, or a related Master’s with a BSN and one year of experience, or a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no additional experience, or a related Doctoral with a BSN and no additional experience. Nurse III: leadership, experience, and creative management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. Requires an MSN plus 2 years of specialized experience (one equivalent to Nurse II), or a related Master’s with a BSN and two years of specialized experience, or a Doctoral in Nursing with one year of specialized experience equivalent to Nurse II, or a related Doctoral with a BSN and one year of specialized experience. Preferred Experience: BSN, recent acute inpatient experience within the past 6 months, more than 2 years of oncology nursing experience (inpatient preferred), and completion of the ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Administration course or equivalent chemotherapy certification. Physical requirements: ability to bend, grasp, kneel, moderate lifting, carrying up to 35 pounds per Safe Patient Handling and Mobility guidelines, and use an appropriate mechanical lift; ability to pivot waist and neck, push and pull items up to 35 pounds, and reach within five feet or above shoulder height; ability to sit, squat, stand, walk, twist, and perform wrist flexion and extension; adequate vision to accurately perform duties; adequate hearing (hearing aids permitted). Competently and safely administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy medications. Efficiently recognize hypersensitivity and other chemotherapy‑related reactions. Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, complex environment. Maintain consistent dedication to performance improvement and evidence‑based nursing practice. Prioritize timeliness, attendance, professionalism, and collegiality. Perform safe medication administration and skilled care related to dressing changes, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, and similar interventions. Provide Veteran‑centered care to patients and families. Deliver patient‑specific purposeful education. Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control measures. Actively participate in a Just Culture environment and support high‑reliability and safety initiatives. Provide specialized and individualized care to each patient. Demonstrate engagement, teamwork, collaboration, professionalism, courtesy, and respect—contributing to a positive work culture.
