Job Description for Microbiology Technician I Understand and practice the principles of Good Laboratory Practices including, but not limited to: Proper hand washing procedure Understand the flow of samples through the quantitative micro lab and be proficient at each step including: Weigh up Setting samples, including the theory and practice of serial dilutions Media manufacturing Media and reagent selection Incubation Reading results: plates, Petrifilm, and MPNs Confirmation testing Apply that understanding to test- and method-specific media and reagent selection including: Weigh up Setting samples, including the theory and practice of serial dilutions Media and reagent selection for the applicable test and method Be able to use basic laboratory equipment such as: Darkfield colony counter Tally counter Top loading balance Thermometer Laboratory safety includes: Proper handling of viable bacterial and fungal cultures Handling of trash (biohazardous and non-biohazardous) Perform independent tests per SOPs, validated, verified, or approved methods, and quality-control procedures. Accurately perform tests and document calculations and results on forms and in LIMS. Work efficiently to multi-task and complete various tests on a large number of samples with short deadlines. Work with fellow lab personnel to ensure completion of tests and a safe and clean work environment. Perform a variety of technical laboratory functions in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment. Communicate effectively with leadership, peers, and customers. Perform job duties according to laboratory policies and procedures consistent with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, FDA requirements as applicable, and other relevant accrediting or certifying agency requirements. Perform a variety of tests using laboratory instrumentation (HPLC, GC, LC/MS, FT-IR, UV/VIS). Testing includes metals, allergens by ELISA, toxins, carbohydrates, preservatives, and sunscreen actives. Prepare standards and controls for all tests performed. Interpret instrumentation results and ascertain if the results are consistent with expected results for the matrix being tested. Compute and record results in accordance with standard procedures, including proper procedures for error correction. Perform chemistry testing using GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICES (GLP). Perform other duties as assigned by leadership, including R&D; additional duties will depend on analyst capability and laboratory needs.
