Aquatic Supervisor - Seasonal

Role Overview Under general supervision of the Recreation Programmer, the Seasonal Aquatic Supervisor assists with the planning, promotion, implementation and supervision of seasonal aquatic programs, staff and facilities. The Aquatic Supervisor is responsible for overseeing various activities at City of Janesville Aquatic Facilities, Rockport and Palmer Pools. Responsibilities Assists with planning, promoting, and implementation of aquatic activities at Rockport and Palmer Pools. Supervises aquatic facilities, including program development, staff training, and facility, equipment, and pump room maintenance. Supervises seasonal staff including scheduling, assigning duties, serving as a point of contact, evaluating performance, reviewing timecards, and maintaining records. Serves as Head Guard/Aquatics Supervisor on duty per schedule. Conducts staff training on rescue skills, EAP, CPR/AED, swim lessons, facility maintenance, and general policies. Purchases materials and supplies as needed, inspects inventories, and manages equipment and facility needs. Coordinates and confirms reservations for rentals, parties, and swim meets, ensuring supplies and food/beverage needs are met. Recommends general program structure, policy, rule changes, and facility improvements. Handles disciplinary actions for aquatic staff and participants, including issuing warnings and suspensions. Monitors program quality, records attendance, revenues, expenses, injuries, maintenance, water testing, and participant satisfaction. Ensures aquatic staff are properly trained and certified for safety, machinery use, chemical logging, and other required procedures. Enforces safety rules, facility policies, patron code of conduct, and WI pool code. Responds quickly to emergencies, administers first aid, CPR or AED, and directs staff during emergencies. Follows all safety regulations, reports unsafe conditions, and logs accidents promptly. Handles public inquiries via phone, email, and office contacts. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned during regular and non-business hours. Other Duties Prepares written publicity for promoting aquatic programs. Attends all staff meetings and trainings as requested. Familiarize with concession stand operations, assist supervision and training, and fill in as needed. Performs all other projects and duties assigned by the supervisor. Minimum Education and Prior Experience Must be 18 years of age or older. Completion of two years of college or technical school in recreation, physical education, sports management, or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must have prior aquatics experience; at least two years of supervisory experience preferred. Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license. Other Qualifications Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certification. Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred. Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator Certification preferred or willing to obtain. Certified Food Manager Certification preferred or willing to obtain. Competencies Knowledge Water safety principles and emergency procedures. Skills Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and manage a high volume of work while adapting to changing priorities. Exceptional communication skills, both verbally and in writing, strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills. Collaboration skills to work with others, achieving common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving. Skill in providing emergency care and leading staff. Basic technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Abilities Develop and conduct programs in a variety of aquatic settings. Oversee all program and maintenance needs of aquatic facilities. Knowledge of pool chemical systems and water testing procedures. Follow city policies, work independently, and make sound decisions. Manage program budget and maintain accurate financial records, including admissions and concessions. Track participation numbers and attendance accurately. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate seasonal employees. Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, procedures, and directives of the City Manager and City Council. Compose routine correspondence and reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, reporting unsafe activities or conditions. Equipment, Instruments and Machines Equipment used includes, but is not limited to: rescue tube, AED, first aid/CPR supplies, personal computer, cash register, copy machine, telephone, chemical feeders, water test kit, pool vacuum, and handicap lift. Working Conditions and Physical Factors Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations. Work is outdoors, with varying weather, including high heat and humidity or cooler weather and chilly water. Occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture. Activities may include semi‑reaching to full‑reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, and lying on stomach and/or back. Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time. Able to see and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
