Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Division of State Lands, as Florida’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship, serves as staff to the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund (Board of Trustees). As such, the Division of State Land’s role goes far beyond just acquiring lands for protection. It provides oversight for the management of activities on more than 12 million acres of public lands including lakes, rivers and islands. These public lands help ensure all Florida’s residents and visitors can experience and truly appreciate the state’s unique landscapes.
In 1841, the U.S. government granted each state in the union 500,000 acres. Combined with the land received because of the Swamp and Overflowed Lands Act of 1850, the Board of Trustees had more than 21 million acres under its control. Since then, Florida has worked to protect and conserve natural resources.
This position is in the Division of State Lands’ Bureau of Survey and Mapping’s Statewide Geodetic Survey Control Section. The position will:
- Conduct organizational studies and evaluations on office procedures providing technical assistance and developing procedures to assist the Bureau of Survey and Mapping to operate more efficiently and effectively.
- Coordinates and assists the writing of descriptions of geodetic control marks to be submitted to the National Geodetic Survey and National Ocean Service.
- Research a potential site in the vicinity of the proposed gauge; and contact landowners, or local government of potential sites and obtain their approval for Tide Gauge installation. Perform benchmarks recovery and researching geodetic marks on LABINS (Land Boundary Information System) and NGS (National Geodetic Survey) websites.
- Coordinates and assists the field crew as needed for establishing geodetic survey control, tide gauges, and tidal benchmarks in accordance with National Geodetic Survey and National Ocean Service procedures throughout the State of Florida. This includes GPS observations and geodetic levels.
- Prepares, submits, and reviews Sunshine 811 Internet Ticket Entry in preparation of NGS 3-Dimensional Rod Mark setting.
- Coordinates and assists in the recovery and construction of geodetic survey control marks.
- Tracks and reports the status of the Geodetic Survey Section’s materials and equipment used for establishing geodetic control, tide gauges and tidal benchmarks.
- Performs mathematical computations necessary for geodetic control surveys.
- Coordinates and assists in the installation of tide gauges for the determination of tidal datums.
- Coordinates and assists in the maintenance of tide gauges.
- Operates and maintains land and water borne vehicles.
- Assists, coordinates, and performs maintenance and inventory on all equipment and materials.
- Assist in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the field crew travel authorizations and reimbursements.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Tide gauges, tidal benchmarks, geodetic control surveying and mapping terminology, principles, tools, instruments and techniques.
Skilled in: Using geodetic control surveying instruments and equipment; preparing maps; operating a personal computer.
Ability to: Analyze and interpret geodetic control surveying data; determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments; communicate technical information verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures; perform technical surveying tasks; demonstrate teamwork; carry up to 30 pounds of survey equipment while walking in excess of 7 miles per day; lift and carry up to 80 pound bags of concrete and participate in the construction of concrete survey geodetic control marks; travel; and work eight 10-hour days in a row.
